Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
09 Seasonal Oddities
A lot of people have been talking about our "chances" to beat this team or that. I thought I'd try to quantify how I felt about each game, and rank them in order. Before the season starts, of course.
Thursday North Dakota State
The only way we lose this one is if half out players trip and break their legs on their way to hit the Bisons coming off the bus.

Sep 26 Army
I’ll respect Army, and their discipline and tenacity. That said, I don’t think that either will be enough.

Sep 19 at Kent State
Generally, I would rank this higher. I did trim off a goodly amount because of recent road woes, but I have a feeling that CPR will find a way to turn past difficulties into a strength.

Oct 03 Kansas State in Kansas City
Bill Snyder is back, but Prince didn’t leave him much in the pocket—let alone in the locker room.

Nov 14 Colorado
Colorado appears to be a team in freefall. We almost got them last year in Boulder, with a better team we’ll get them in Ames this time around.

Oct 17 Baylor (Homecoming)
If all of Baylor were Robert Griffin, they would be to be feared. Austen Arnaud has more weapons than Griffin, and the game is in Ames. That translates to a Win.

Sat, Sep 12 Iowa
I’m basing this largely on home field advantage, while noting that Iowa is thin at corner. We have a number of weapons for any defensive backfield to be responsible for.

I really can’t read this one. I think that we have a good chance, and I like that we catch them in the middle of four road games, especially with big rivalries involved. On the other hand, they have a decent offense of their own, and an explosive freshman back named Christine Michael who could be the Next Big Thing. I’m guessing we’ll only face him once. Of course, I’d also be happy if Sed Johnson did a Blythe impression on his one trip to a school he almost signed with.

The good news is that the Tigers suffered some big graduation losses. The bad news is that by this point of the season they’ll have had every opportunity to sort them out—or not.

I might like the chances with this one, considering how our offense did against them last season. I don’t like the fact that they have two weeks to prepare—or that they will have had plenty of opportunity for scouting by now.

Sat, Nov 07 Oklahoma State
We catch the Cowboys in a tough stretch for them. And the game is in Ames. This is one that I would love to be an upset, but the Cowboys have an awful lot of weapons. By the time this one rolls around, it could be a matchup between Herman’s guns and Gundy’s—a real shootout at the OK Corral.

Another one that I would like to see an upset in, but given that the game is in Lincoln, and the Huskers have a good defense returning, it might not matter how inept their offense may prove to be.

Interesting. I want to read this again after tomorrow is over.
Right now, it's kickoff time!!!
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
That comes up to 6.94 wins this season. That is a bit high in my opinion but I like the break down.
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
Oklahoma State is way too high. Putting a bit too much into home field advantage. It was only 2 seasons ago UNI came to Jack Trice and beat us.
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
Totally agree with your order. Totally disagree with the % chances.
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
Stuff like this just gives opposing fans ammo, imo.
If you wanted to bet me, using your odds, on every single one of those games, I would take the other team for the whole season, in a heartbeat.
Just so we're clear, you expect the record for ISU this season to be 6.94 - 5.06 (3.7 - 4.3 conference), which might be unfair to the new coaching staff and players. I'm not saying we absolutely can't go 7-5 (4-4), but I expect something closer to 4-8 (1-7).
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
I don't think any of these it totally out of line. I think Okie St. may be more like 10 at best though. They are going to be top 10 all year in my opinion. 50 might be a little high for A&M also considering our recent history on the road. I will be very surprised if we don't beat KSU and Colorado, though. The cupboard is bare at KSU and Hawkins is not panning out at CU. I was at the game in Boulder last year and I still don't understand how we lost that game. We had the better players.

Who gives a **** about other teams fans? Seriously, we get no respect anyway, might as well have a little faith.

Just so we're clear, it's kinda hard to win 6.94 games.
There are a number of unknowables, and far too many imponderables to make any prediction with certainty. This what what we cal "just for fun", and why I made it clear that this was my opinion--and that at this stage of the season. For all we know, one of the teams on the schedule will do an El Collapso that no one can foresee--that's why they call 'em unforeseeable.
Go pee in someone else's Koolaid, pal.
Re: Seasonal Oddities--Game by Game
Lol 99% thats pretty good odds.
I guess I would put it more at 75/25 in favor of ISU
Dont worry if you do happen to lose Im sure its cuz this is the worst Iowa State team ever. :jimlad:

Well, of course your homerism (and ignorance of our team) would swing it 24 points.

Dude - should the title of the post be "seasonal odds?"
Oddities implies weird facts about each game.

"Oddities" reflected my own takes on the game--I wasn't intending to be anything anyone would call "accurate" or take seriously. Silly me. .
