Herman can't call a good game because he has not faith in Arnaud throwing a good pass. So right now we basically have to run the ball and while we run good the other team has if figured out by the 3rd quarter that we can't pass at all. I've always thought the take that a coach plays a player out of loyalty was weak. do you really think a coach would risk his job and his credibility with his coaches and team by not playing an overall better player over a player just out of 'loyalty'? I guarantee you that if we have a better QB this year or next year, that he will play. I very much doubt that Rhodes would put L's in front of changing a QB.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
He's pretty bad. Can't make a check ever. Has his mind made up who he is throwing the ball to before its snapped. If there not open he's tucking it away and taking off. He's a decent runner . Kind of slow but effective. To me, he just looks completely lost in the offense.

I think he will pick up the offense alot better in the next few games. But yes he needs to work on his mechanics, some of those throws are pretty bad. If he is still playing like this midway through the big 12 schedule then a look to someone else has to be made. I will still give him time for now..........

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
I'm sure everyone at Rice was having this same discussion the first year Herman was at Rice and that QB was throwing more interceptions than TDs. This is going to take time and obviously AA is the best we have just support him and hope he continues to learn.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
Do you notice that arnaud looks pretty good throwing to the tightends, Jake Williams and usually Hamilton?? I would say if the other recievers knew where they were running most of the time AA would look worlds better just my opinion though.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
In a way, it's hard to read this type of thread. We all had hoped that AA would be much better than he has shown by now. He is a horse on the wildcat type runs and no one doubts his heart and effort. But, he is simply not an upper echelon, or maybe even average, passer in the Big XII. That's a fact. All you have to do is look at the play calling. The staff does not believe they can count on him to make a series of good throws. I haven't looked at the DVR yet, but how many times were we second and 5 or so yesterday? It seemed to me that there were quite a few. Perfect throwing down, and what was almost always called? Running play. That tells you all you need to know.
Then the question becomes, do you just ride out this year and next with AA because of what he has meant to the team and his personal, (read: Native Iowan), history and take your lumps, ala Bret Meyer, or do you do something about a weakness at a position that is by far the most important in the sport of college football. I'm sorry, but I think you do something. I know PR will have to consider what that might do to the psyche of the team, but if you can get a better thrower, via JC route or if the staff thinks Tiller can be the guy, you have to make the move. Maybe they don't think they have the guy yet. Maybe it's late in the year when we may be out of bowl contention, I don't know. But if they can get their hands on a better thrower, you must make the change.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
if you are going to run the spread you need to recruit high school qbs like leach does at texas tech-kids that have thrown for 3000 to 4000yds per year in high school. leach has his jewel coming in next year from denton guyer -scotty young who is a flame thrower. mizzou had chase daniels.if you want a a good qb you go after the big dogs that can play with the big dogs.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
As I understand, Herman's offense is so complex a JUCO guy coming in over the summer wouldn't have a ghost of a chance at learning it by fall.
As I remember there were a few "quarterback experts" 3 years ago calling for Arnaud to start a a freshman over Meyer since he was a great quarterback that was far superior to Meyer. Now we have the "quarterback experts" guessing that Tiller is better than Arnaud. Sounds familiar.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
Man have I about had it with ignorant people posting about AAs ability to throw the ball and the fact we need someone else. AA has been the only stable thing from last year to this year. Remove him and then you lose that. It is very hard to complete passes when your receivers are not open. I thought he looked a lot better yesterday than he has. It looks to me like he has a lot of trouble with a 5 yard out or curl and I don't know why he hops them in. I have faith that he will return to the form of late last year. Things with a new offense don't happen overnight. I think it is pretty idiotic to think Tiller would be better for us than Arnaud since we haven't hardly seen him play and when he has he hasn't done much of anything with no pressure on him.
How come you guys can talk about all of the bad throws he makes but no one ever mentiong the 5 yard scrambles he has to move the chains?

This is pretty wrong. Actually way wrong. Did Vince Young run a spread? How about Pat White? I think they both did and I think Pat White ran the ball more than he threw it. The spread offense is an alignment description. It has nothing to do with playcalling. Spread means you spread the defense over the whole field. There is nothing that says you have to run or pass. There isn't a specific mold for a QB made for a spread offense. There are a lot of different types that can be successful.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
Pat White completed almost 65% of his passes for over 6,000 yards and 56 TDs at West Virginia. He was a decent thrower I would say.

Re: Are we recruiting a Juco Quarterback
vince young did not run the spread-he ran the shotgun and had a pair of wheels that he could outrun his competition. if you r going to run the spread, you had best recruit a passing qb. the spread is a pass first, run last offense. i would like to see a single wing tailback or a triple option qb run mike leach's offense.leach recruits a qb that has grown up on the spread.he has qbs sitting on his bench that can run the spread as good as his top qb.his top qb suffered concussion hits in yesterday's ball game and he did not know where he was. his second string qb came in and texas tech won their game handily.there are only a few teams in texas that turn out good spread qbs and most of them are very successful high school coaches. art briles at baylor used to be a high school coach. he was successfulat houston and has put together a fairly formidable squad at baylor.he is suffereing some now due to the loss of his main cog robert griffin.

Nobody here is ignorant or an idiot, dude. All we're saying is that it looks an awful lot like AA is not a thrower that will get us anywhere with this program when we are in the Big XII. That's all. Maybe we're wrong. I certainly hope so.

The down field throws are quite a bit easier to hit than the outs. From what I see, defenses consistently hedge towards covering the middle and seem content to giving the outs because of his inability to consistently make that throw.

I agree with this 100%. I'm not saying Tiller is the answer by any means but at this point we're lacking a qb that will get us anywhere in regards to Big XII play. Hopefully AA will step it up as the season progresses and I'm really hoping for that but it spooks me how eerily this resembles the Bret Meyer situation.
Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
