Recruiting JUCO Defensive Players....
All the talk about the front 7 got me to thinking about who we might be targeting from JUCO for the defensive side of the ball? Realistically, no high school kid is going to step in and play in the front 4 and highly unlikely in the linebackers corp either....so the only way to make an immediate upgrade for those that are departing is through the JUCO ranks....so...i looked into who ISU might be targeting to help improve those areas for next year. DT
Carlton Hudson 3* 6'-3" 290 lbs 4.9 40 (no offer yet) Scout.com: Carlton Hudson Profile
David Mahoney 3* 6'-2" 290 lbs 5.0 40 (offered) Scout.com: David Mahoney Profile
Andrew Blood 1* 6'-5" 285 lbs (not offer) Scout.com: Andrew Blood Profile
Matangi Tonga 1* 6'-3" 285 lbs 4.67 40 (offered) Scout.com: Matangi Tonga Profile DE
Wayne Dorsey 5* 6'-8" 255 lbs (offered - not looking good some big hitters after him) Scout.com: Wayne Dorsey Profile
Kyle Murphy 2* 6'-4" 260 lbs 4.8 40 (not offered) Scout.com: Kyle Murphy Profile
Scardino Daniels 1* 6'-5" 250 lbs (not offered) Scout.com: Scardino Daniels Profile OLB
Derek Earls 3* 6'-3" 255 lbs 4.5 40 (offered) Scout.com: Derek Earls Profile
Homer Mauga 2* 6'-0" 220 lbs 4.7 40 (not offered) Scout.com: Homer Mauga Profile MLB
NONE
This shows that they evidently feel there are some guys out there that can provide either a challenge to the starting spot or veterans depth.
I would love to see us get 2 DE - 1 DT - 1-2 LB. I understand the comments about the need to get quality high school kids and develop them. Don't disagree, the problem is that Chizik did not do that for two years these three positions were a recruiting weakness and now we need immediate help to ensure our defense continues to improve thus luring better players on that side of that can be developed into playmakers. But, in looking at the impact of David Sims, 1-2 players of the right caliber can make a huge impact to the overall schemes.

Scout.com does a great job of covering ISU recruiting.

You know I am really getting tired of this ****, So I guess all those redshirts are chopped liver? And all those that are not graduating (juniors, sophmores, redshirt freshman) none of them can develope more.
We want it now! we do not want to work for it! this is the world we live in today.

Re: Recruiting JUCO Defensive Players....
Andrew Blood might have the best name for his position since Pat Angerer.
Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

Re: Recruiting JUCO Defensive Players....
Unfortunately a coach has 2-4 years nowadays to provide results. For Rhoads, years 2-3 are rehtardly difficult schedules. That means, if we infuse no Juco help, we are looking at 3 mediocre/losing years followed by a potential good 4th year.
Let's see how many around here are patient enough to wait 3 years with sub-500 records, (which may very well happen regardless of who we recruit).
Imo, the coaching staff should hammer home how much we have returning on offense next year and get across the point that just a little defensive help and this team will jump leaps and bounds. Perhaps that help is already standing on the sidelines in the form of youth, but at the sametime we need to go out and take a chance at some juco talent to cover all bases.

Agreed they can but at a cost which is to high. Jucos come in and give you 2 years, never know how they will fit into the system, or how relible they are. Not saying we should not look there are some good ones expecialy in the RB WR area but if you start giving away to many scholys you give away your core strength. This thread say they want 7 JUCOS for the front DL. Are you kidding me!

Whoa. Have you not noticed we have a severe lack of talent in our front four and there hasn't been anyone recruited in the past 3 years that is FOR SURE a legitimate playmaker?

RB is about the last position I want a JUCO. With natural talent a freshman running back can be just as good. RB is a instinct position, you are just trying to survive. That's why a lot of freshman RBs are able to help their teams right away. I'm not saying there aren't some out there worth having, it's just that I feel there are a lot more positions that could use experienced players.
