Coach Rhoads and headset
Sorry if it's been brought up, but I was curious as to why CPR doesn't wear a headset. Is this a "normal" thing? I think it's kind of cool that him and Joe Pa both let their Coordinators do their thing. I'm sure he still says what he needs and gets on from time to time, but I've noticed the last two weeks that he doesn't wear them.
I'm clueless of what that means.

I'm clueless of what that means. if you read about Jopa on here, you would know that he is clueless, doesn't coach, and is just a figurehead for the program.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
CPR stated after the NDSU game that he doesn't wear the headset because it keeps him in tune with the players and out of his coaches' decisions.
If you look closely he usually has someone following him with a headset to either relay something on to him or give it to him to wear briefly. I believe Bobby Bowden has done the same thing for years.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
He liked the feel of the first game (where the headsets didn't work for most of the game) opposed to the second, where he did wear the headset.
He said he felt disconnected from the players

Or should I say talks to them a lot. I love his demeanor and if he has half the success as Bobby or Jo Pa, we will have a coach for life.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
He definitely seems to enjoy interacting with the players.
He's always at the front of the line giving high fives or a good game slap whenever a unit comes off the field.
I see him put a headset on when some decision making needs to be made by the offense, is there anyone in the booth besides Herman and extra sets of eyes?
I'm sure he would be more involved with defensive decisions on gameday if he didn't have Burnham there with him.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
i, too, was incredibly curious about this after the first couple of games. it makes complete sense as to why he does it, and is great that he is showing 100% trust in his coordinators to do their jobs.
I'm telling ya, he is building a great culture for the coaches and players. I just hope it translates into w/l success.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
Herman and Burnham are both smart enough to call the plays, maybe with Rhoads making a little adjustment every now and then.

It's a little weird because the only guys I know that do this are Paterno and Bowden and it's because they don't coach...LOL.

Re: Coach Rhoads and headset
I am really surprised there isn't some sort of middle-ground available. Coaches still wear these really god-awfully-huge headsets out of the 19th century. I have a bluetooth headset that you can barely see. I would be surprised if there wasn't something available for two-way use that is similar.

I doubt a blue tooth headset blocks out the sound of 50,000-100,000 people screaming in your ear the way a big bulky headset that covers your ears does Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!!! Yeah but with the crowd noise, you also need something that muffles the outside sound = old style head sets.
