REFS....explain
Why are they having Big 12 Refs and SEC ref, Big 10 refs...why not just have refs... that referee the games... so if they do a Big 12 game one week let them do a SEC the next... and so on. They mae it sound like there is "Different" rules when you play in different conferences...please explain

I'm thinking the traveling issues? could be wrong, but just a guess
"These are my new shoes. They're good shoes. They won't make you rich like me, they won't make you rebound like me, they definitely won't make you handsome like me. They'll only make you have shoes like me. That's it." - Charles Barkley -
Re: REFS....explain
Referees are hired by each conference. Who else would/could hire them? The home team or the visiting team certainly can't hire the refs as it would create a conflict of interest. It would be difficult for the NCAA to hire them as they're dealing with literally thousands of referees who are paid differently (Big 12 pays more than Missouri Valley which pays more than Div II which pays more than Div III, etc.). And it would take an army of people to evaluate them and decide who should move up to bigger games and who should not. So it has always been conferences that hire referees, for both football and basketball. In basketball, almost all referees work for multiple conferences and it is not unusual to see the same ref working a Big 12 game one night, a Big 10 game the next night, and a Pac 10 game the following night (e.g. Ed Hightower). Theoretically a football referee could do the same thing but since 99% of the games are on Saturdays, it would be almost impossible.
Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good. Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better. Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step. My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk,superdorf, clones_jer. That is all. -
Re: REFS....explain
just was refering to Division 1......but you still would need the same amount of referees ...make the pay the same... and that solves it...

Re: REFS....explain
Who would you control the refs. I mean, if they screwed up a call like pass interference when the ball lands 10 yards out of bounds who else would be able to punish them. Oh, wait, never mind.

Re: REFS....explain
The conferences actually can have different rules. When the NCAA first started doing instant replay, some conferences had it, some didn't, and the conferences that did have it had different rules for implementing it.

Re: REFS....explain
The referees are not full time. They have other full time employment. As such, travel would certainly be an issue. In addition to that, at present each conference hires their own crews.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: REFS....explain
Referees are independent contractors. Each league has an assignor who is charged with hiring officials. When you hear the term "Big XII crew" it only refers to what conference contracted with them for that particular game. It does not mean they don't work in other leagues. Most officials work in multiple leagues. During bowl season you will hear of crews being from a specific league. That is only because they were "nominated" by a particular league for a bowl game.

"at present each conference hires their own crews" - that can be also be bad...as in paying off and throwing the games-
