    Re: Be Honest

We used up all of our IOUs, chits, and karma for that game. I kept telling my wife that there was no way Nebraska would turn it over again after the fourth t o. It also wouldn't matter about the 4 points missed because N would score too many points. I also remember coaches saying teams normally don't win with 4 or 5 more t os than the other team, but we are Iowa State and could lose getting 5, 6, 7, 8 !! We have been ISU fans too long and know that something always happens.

I normally hate listening on the radio, but knowing we were probably going to lose, it was easier to listen. Then ended up holding our breath and screaming in our van as we hurried to get to a 3:00 wedding!

    GO STATE !!

I agree that we need to lose the loser mentality, but you really can't blame anyone for thinking it was going to happen. This game defied all astrological logic when it comes to being a Cyclone fan. People will expect to win when they have a chance to experience it more often.

Like the rest of you, I was waiting for the hammer to fall on us on the final drive. I spent the entirety of the fourth quarter on my knees about three feet from the TV. I was actually shaking on Nebraska's final drive. When Jesse made the last int, I jumped up and down and screamed for 5 minutes before I could relax. I frightened the wife and the dog. It was awesome.

This describes my reaction perfectly. I was a student at ISU for this game in 1984.

1984 Oklahoma at Iowa State Football Box Score - SoonerStats.com#

Oklahoma was #2 in the country and ISU hadn't beaten them in 27 years or something. We had them that day (actually a night game); completely outplayed them for three quarters and they kicked a FG as time expired to win. I have never forgotten that feeling and was suffering flashbacks as Nebraska took over for their final drive...

    Re: Be Honest

I've been a Cyclone fan long enough for the "how's ISU going to lose it this week" to always be present in the back of my mind. But for whatever reason, it felt different this week. I mean, the doubt was in the back of my mind, but for whatever reason I just knew the defense was going to take care of business this week. Maybe it was the 7 turnovers. Maybe it was the fact that the defense has played well not just this Saturday, but mostly all year. But for whatever reason, with the game on the line on Nebraska's final possession, that game was the most confident that I had ever felt as a Cyclone fan that we'd stop them.

    Re: Be Honest

Let me preface by saying my girlfriend hates everything related to ISU athletics. Well, maybe not hates, but lets just say she doesn't have the greatest sympathies for them if we lose. She graduated from there, but that's the only allegiance she has to the university.

I've taken her to a few games; most notably, the absolute drubbing Oklahoma State recieved in Ames for homecoming, and our first OT win against Toledo.

We were watching the game on TV. She's half-interested, but with most of her attention going towards the computer game she was playing. She must have noticed the anxiety in my body language because she finally pipes up "Don't be so worried, they're going to win." "How can you say that with 4 minutes to go!" "It's 4 minutes, it's not that long." "Do you KNOW ISU AT ALL?"

I think for the next few weeks until the end of the season, I need to be learning how to harness this apparent psychic energy that she possesses. Hmm.

Although, after the game, she did genuinely and innocently ask, "So, is this their first win of the season?"

I didn't give us a chance until that final pick by Jesse. I felt "pretty good" after the pick by O'Connell. But my gut sank when we had to punt it back to them.

I couldn't watch it on TV and had to listen on the radio. When we had to punt for the last time I kept thinking there was too much time left. When Smith intercepted the ball I wasn't sure how much time was left, so I wasn't sure if we could run out the clock.

    Re: Be Honest

Running the ball during our last drive and forcing NU to burn all their timeouts was pretty big. If they had even 1 remaining timeout, we would have needed a first down, and we all know those were rare in that game. Loved the timing of that interception.

I have to admit, up until that last interception I was waiting for something to happen. I couldn't believe Jesse caught that ball. I kept having flashbacks to 2005 and Leaders when he dropped the one in overtime. I kept thinkging, "Holy crap, did he really just catch that?" At that point, I knew it was finally our day.

I will admit though, the whole game, I kept thinking, "What's going to happen?" Also, on a siimilar note. I knew Mahoney would make the 52 yarder, knew it. I also knew the PAT and the other field goal were going to be blocked.

    Re: Be Honest

I was only able to watch the first quarter of the game. Months ago when I assumed we would have no chance my future mother-in-law decided to throw us an engagement party that day. Luckily the best man kindly made the trip from Ames up to MN for the party and earned his keep by thinking ahead and having someone feed him text updates during the game. As the party went by and the score wasn't changing I kept getting more and more convinced that we would lose it in the last minute. However, we no sooner got done giving a toast to our parents and letting people get back to their own conversations than my best man turned to me smiling holding up a cell phone that simply said "Cyclones Win!" Great Day!

The 52 yarder would have been good from, what, 65 maybe? Crazy long/accurate FG.
May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.)

I did. I figured the missed extra point would bite us just like Kansas. That's what made this victory so sweet!

    Re: Be Honest

I certainly did. Even when O'Connell intercepted the second to last interception I was thinking in my head how much time we could run off the clock. I knew the Nebraska had 2 timeouts, so I figured we had to get atleast one first down and we didn't. Even on 4th and 10 I wasn't overly confident.

    Re: Be Honest

I still think one of the biggest things Sat was the start of the 4th. Nebraska punted and we started around the 5yd line. We were able to move the ball and take 7 min off the clock. I honestly had no feeling how the game would end up when they got the ball back the last time. I wore a path around the coffee table because I was so nervous. My 5-yr old was concerned that something was wrong with me. I said, "don't worry, it's another ISU game coming down to the wire" Like someone said earlier, and I agree, I wasn't completely confident the game was over until the last snap with 30 secs or so. what a game!!!
