What's your favorite 70s football memory?

Since so there's been so much talk about our first win in Memorial Stadium since 1977, I thought it'd fun for us old guys to recall those glory players/games of the 70s. If the names Mike Strahan, Buddy Hardeman, Wayne Stanley, Dexter Green, Luther Blue, Mike or Maynard Strensrud, Tom Boskey or others bring back fond memories, let's hear 'em.

I was a little girl...went to a few of the games with my Dad. My most distinct memory of that era was that my parents bought a giant YELLOW conversion van to go to the Peach Bowl. My favorite player was Dexter Green.

Re: What's your favorite 70s football memory?

    1976 Cyclones Earle Bruce era

It was the Bi-centennial, and the team finished the season with an 8–3 record and a No. 18 ranking, but was snubbed by the bowls even though their losses were to the #1, #2 and #3 teams in the country. But to be fair (if you can call it that) There weren't that many bowl games back then to go around. So even after all these years, it doesn't really matter how good we got. Coach Bruce was selected as the Big Eight Coach of the year and had four players garner all conference honors, including All-American Split End, Luther Blue. Iowa State would have tied for a share of the Big Eight title with a win over Oklahoma St. in the season finale, but they lost. They did however upset Nebraska 37–28, (their first win over Nebraska since 1960)

In 1979 I did get to shake hands with then Iowa State assistant coach, Pete Carroll. (no big deal then)

My first ISU game was in the fall of 1966 and I didn't miss another home game until 1985.

I was sitting next to Keith Krepfle's Dad and brother in the Sun Bowl in 1972 when Keith caught a touchdown pass. Needless to say we had one heck of a celebration right there!

For the Peach Bowl, we rented a motor home with another couple and drove it down for the game. My wife was pregnant with our son. As a 30-year salute to the trip, we bought a new motorhome in 2008. We bought the same brand as the one we had rented in 1977-78.

I have bunches more of memories from the 70's but there isn't enough room here for all of them!

You picked a good favorite player. Here is the kind of person Dexter was. A good friend of mine had his car parked out near the football stadium. I was dropping him off to pick it up and we noticed a scratch on it from another car. No one was around and there would have been no way to ever find out who did it. But....we saw a note wrapped around the windshield wiper.

It read (and I'm going from memory):
"I'm terribly sorry about this damage. I will make sure it is taken care of but I will be out of town for a few days. Here is my phone number..... Please contact me when the team gets back from the Peach Bowl.
    Signed, Dexter Green"

This doesn't really qualify as a favorite, but I have very few ISU memories from the 70's. I went to watch Iowa State play Oklahoma when Billy Sims was playing. All I can remember is that it was freezing cold, and that it was freezing cold.

    beating Nebraska 2 consecutive years.

I still say that Mike Stensrud, McFarland and Randall were the best defensive line in the Big 8. (A lot of people argue with that because of the Selmon Bros at OU, but I thnk our guys were the best).

Re: What's your favorite 70s football memory?

Lot's of great memories from both of the stadiums but if I had to pick my most vivid single memory it would have to be Luther Blue's TD Kick return in 1976. And one thing about that game, it was colder than crap the day before and it was predicted to be very cold for the Nebraska game but it turned out to be a very nice day in the 50's if I remember correctly. But, the day before on Friday it was brutal for the JV game.

Re: What's your favorite 70s football memory?

My favorite memories are both from our win against Nebraska in '76. First is Luther Blue returning a 90 yard kickoff return to break the Huskers back.

Second is standing on the sidelines as Vince Ferragamo and Huskers ran sweep after sweep into the taunting ISU fans when game had been decided.
Clone to the Bone with the up and coming IOWA STATE.

one of mine is all the assistant coaches we had before they were "names" Joe Avezzano '72, Joe Bugel "73, Pete Carroll "78, Larry Coyer '79, and Jackie Sherrill '72. and honorable mention Jimmy "how bout them Cowboys" Johnson '68-69. some great names there.
