Though I can't believe I spent time on those crazy unlikely scenarios.
I think the bigger issue is this:
A deserving winning team is defined as one that wins a minimum of six games against
Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) competition and has a record that includes more wins
than losses. [Exception: Each year, a FBS institution may count a victory against a Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent that has averaged 90 percent of the permissible
maximum number of grants-in-aid per year in FCS over a rolling two-year period.]
It doesn't say they can count 2 victories. Again, this is right at the beginning of the eligibility section - they would only have 5 victories that count, 4 of which are against FBS competition. Because this dictates eligibility for post season play, I would interpret that to say they are not eligible to participate in a championship game.
I think it would be hilarious if it comes to this - Bill Snyder comes back to KSU - follows old method of playing as many high school teams as possible to pad resume. Rules change and you can't count so many high school wins... :biglaugh:
Yep - that ineligible piece is the only way to get ISU there, but I would be fascinated if it happened. I think ANY press is good press, and they sure as heck would talk about THAT forever! Imagine how many times during the Big XII championship game we would hear about CPR being proud of the team..
Snyder knew exactly what he was doing when he scheduled both Massachusetts and Tennessee Tech. One look at his players during off season workouts would convince him or anyone with two eyes and half a brain that wins would be precious and few come fall. I am sure he was NOT concerned with bowls in any way shape or form. There is no way he could have envisioned how bad the Big 12 north would be or how much his team would improve. You also have to consider that his QB and RB were not squad members when he completed the schedule for this fall.
I am going to give ISU fans some advice. Cheer your lungs out for your team the next two Saturdays. I plan to do that for both KSU and ISU. There is no good reason why ISU cannot sweep these two games. KSU will have to play flawlessly and get some help from the oppositition to win either of the next two games. NU and MU both have better talent. Yeah, I said it, "ISU has more talent than KSU".
