Just look at FCS, there are about 20 teams which show up over and over in their playoffs; Youngstown State, Montana, App State, UNI, Georgia Southern and a few more.
Institute a playoff and whatever FBS looks like will basically be what you get for the forseeable future. That means schools that have had some relatively good seasons in the last ten years but can struggle like; Wazzou, Ore St., Vandy, USF, us, Northwestern, ECU...we'd all be done. In fact we'd start losing recruits to the perennial FCS powers since they would become more visible than the FBS "have nots".
Re: Bowl Games are Stupid...
Currently the college football universe is defined as the haves vs. the have-nots. The teams that have overflowing coffers almost always beat up on teams that are sctratching to get by.
If a playoff system were instituted, this situation would be even more rediculous. Correct me if I'm wrong but right now, if ISU goes 6-6 and is selected for a bowl, they get a share of the Big 12 bowl payouts. If we go 5-7, we get nothing from the payouts. If there is a playoff system, only the top 32 max would be involved and every dollar would be funelled into those teams. Everyone outside the top 50 might as well move to the FCS system or drop football all together.
I am also really sick of people complaining that there are too many bowls. It might not mean a lot to you if a 6-6 team goes to a bowl, but it does matter to the players on that team, the program gains visibility and usually increased revenue, and the fans get a chance to see another football game with their team.
If there are bowl games that want to give NCAA football teams and conferences money, why the hell would we want to say no? "Sorry, we have too many bowls and 6-6 is just not good enough. Give your money to someone else."
I know that back in the old days, bowl games meant more. A team had to have a really good record to get one and it was an honor. Now the honor is not just making any bowl, but making a really good bowl. Sure 6-6 may get you the Texas bowl, but 9-3 will get you a more prestigious bowl and you also get your increased accomplishment.
In todays NCAA football world, parity is actually improving. Stanford can beat the top two teams in the Pac10 and TCU can get to a BCS game. Back in the day, you were either one of the teams that had always been good, or you were one of the teams that good teams beat up on regularly. Notre Dame always won back then because they always had 4 superstar QBs on scholarship and had all american calibre athletes sitting on the bench. Now, even though the "haves" still have a lot more resources available, with the right coach and a little luck, bad teams can become relevant.
If you move to a full playoff system, where only 32 of the 119 Div1 teams can participate, you kill college football.

What's the point?
I also don't understand why those who aren't bowl eligible don't get the extra practices. Isn't that completely backwards from the way it should be? These are the teams that apparently need the extra practices the most.
I agree with you on the practice issue teams that are not bowl eligible should get more time to recruit and more time to practice than teams that go to bowl games. Maybe another week or 2 of spring practice or a longer contact period with recruits. I am sure their are smarter people that me that could tell me why this wouldn't work

If we were 7-5 or better last year then no 6-6 would not be an achievement. After 3-9 and 2-10 seasons 6-6 is a heck of an accomplishment, especially if you factor in 3 coaching staffs in 4 years. I'm happy with 6-6.:smile:
