Football Recruiting: Scouting Report on Durrell Givens

I had a chance to talk with Chaffey CC head football coach Carl Leach last week. Here are his thoughts on Iowa State safety commit Durrell Givens.

Good stuff. I hope we have another Sims on our hands with him. Nothing against Mike, but I hope Givens can come in and take it to that next level like Sims did.

The 2 safety's next year will be: Sims and Givens. Givens takes the job easily.

More higher level competition is what we need. Plus, extra, capable bodies is great.

I agree too...I've just learned to hold out on JUCO's though. You just never know. They could be a Sims...they could be a Webster Patrick.

Sims had such an impact on this year's team. Remember last year when teams, even bad ones, would complete something like over 70% of passes against us? Yeah, Sims pretty much ended that.

Wally and CPR helped too, but Sims and the Smiths really did some work.

Webster Patrick was a high school running back when he signed with us though....wasnt he?

I think it's safe to expect Givens to be a starter next year

Going by memory here. I believe he went JUCO and "committed again" only to never show up. I remember writing the story for Scout. It was this big debacle. Iowa State's coaches didn't want the info out...his coach told me that Nelson was on campus...just a big fat debacle.

haha...that entire class...Patrick, Coleman, Thompson, Scales and B-Gunn...wow...no wonder the program had some massive down years as far as running the football goes.

If I recall, WP didn't come close to meeting academic standards either out of hs or Juco.

On the more positive side, Chris Ash has proven to have a much better handle on recruiting than Mike Nelson or some of the others recruiting west coast jucos for Mac ever did.

So we lose a leader in each of our Defensive positions-Lyle (DE), Jesse Smith (LB), James Smith (DB). However, there are some studs coming in on this years class---I'm not even worried about the LB position anymore---we will have alot of young guys competing for playing time but they are talented. LJ, Benton (if he is healthy), Sims, and Givens in the defensive backfield is without a doubt the best secondary we have had in awhile. The DL should be alright if our DT/NG's have a good off season. Parker will take up one DE spot with Moore, Neal, Maggitt, Laing, Nelson, and possibly one more player in the mix---very impressive class overall!!!

Givens won't be hear for spring ball, correct?

I'll be surprised if he steps right in in August and start immediately next year over O'Connell. Safety is a position that needs to know the defense like the back of their hand and how to be in the right position no matter what the offense throws at you. If he backups up Sims and O'connel next year and starts as a Sr I will be very pleased.

It'd be great if he did come in and start right away. I would just be surprised, given that he is a safety that won't be in for spring ball, he did not have other reported BCS offers, and he was not 1st or 2nd team All Conference in his JC league.
