Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
I know that many fans have been crying for there to be a playoff system in college football for the last 10 years or so. I personally, am completely against it for many reasons.
Look at this last week of college football. How great was it? Texas vs Nebraska was a game with so much on the line for Texas. They win and they are in the BCS Championship game. Lose, and their title chances are gone. BUT what if we were in an 8 team playoff system? Would that game have mattered at all? Answer is no. Texas would have already locked up a spot and losing wouldn't have cost them anything. The emotion that we saw out of Texas when they made the FG would have been gone. Mack Brown would have probably sat a lot of his good players from the game a lot like the do in the NFL.
Same goes for Florida vs. Alabama. What a great week leading up to the game. Winner is playing in the National Championship game. Now imagine if there was a playoff system. Players don't play, coaches don't show anything, and what would have been a great game, becomes a snoozer.
In the NFL does anybody cares who wins the NFC EAST? No. All they care about is who goes to the Super Bowl. If college football goes to a playoff system then nobody will care who won the Big 12 or SEC.
Also, you can make an argument that the rich get richer. Teams like Texas, Florida, Bama have a chance at making the "playoffs" quite often. Think of all the extra practice time they get, the extra coverage they get.
Tradition!
Not everything is fair, not everything is perfect but IMO the BCS is the best, MOST intriguing option out there and should stay.

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
the playoffs start in week one in college football. No other sport has a regular season like it. every game truly matters. in the nfl, the super bowl team can have 4-5+ losses! That isn't right. The super bowl champ just needs to be pretty good in the regular season (9-7 or something) and then play well in the playoffs and be the champ

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
I dont want a playoff
The bolls are great
ISU would never get into the playoff
We might make a BCS game by winning the north soon
If you have a problem - if no one else can help - and if you can find
them - maybe you can hire: The A-Team. -
Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
I think that any playoff system should include only conference champions. How can you expect to be a national champion if you aren't first the champion of your own conference. Best in the country but third in the SEC? This makes the conference season worth something and takes care of most of your arguments.

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
Obviously, the biggest argument for the current system is the exciting season that college football produces.

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
I definately favor a playoff system. Division I football is the ONLY NCAA sport where the national championship is not decided on the field. I think it's rediculous.

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
If there was an 8 team playoff you would either have to
a) win your conference, so all those conference championships would still have importance. It would basically be like the first weekend of the NCAA Basketball Tournament
b)go undefeated or have one loss
You wouldn't see ANY cheepies getting into the playoffs.

We might make a BCS game by winning the north soon We will never make a BCS game without winning the conference championship. Do that and you would make the playoffs in ANY system.

and the other bowls are nothing but exhibition games, especially the other BCS games. They are worthless.

They take the two best teams in the nation and pit them against each other for the championship game.

What's the point of playing a 12 to 13 game season if your going to have a playoff system in college?
Also all the BCS games are exciting IMO. And I think most would agree with me since 60K fans travel thousands of miles to watch their teams play

Re: Why I am AGAINST a playoff system
If the goal of the BCS is to make the most exciting matchups, then you are correct. But, if the goal is to see what team is the best in the nation, the BCS doesn't cut it. Many people want to crown a national champion, and the best way to do that is to have a playoff.
You bring up very good points. A conversation about the BCS has to consider what the overall goals of the system should be.
