Two scholarships left to give out (according to CPR). One will be held open until Shontrelle Johnson makes his decision. (IMO I think the odds are still good that SJ will go with the Cyclones.) Second will likely go to the best defensive player available (Kirksey, Dancy, B. Reedy, J. Miles or Dartwan Bush - if he reopens the process).
Rhoads said the other day that 21 out of 23 official visitors have committed. That's a crazy number. Shontrelle Johnson is one of the two who haven't committed yet, and I think the other was a visitor for the Bradley game. I read somewhere it was a CB, but I don't know who. I think the three commits that haven't officially visited are T.J. McCullough, Brandon Jensen, and Clifford Morgan.
I doubt we will have a commitment rate from official visitors that high every year, but I wonder if having 20+ commitments by mid December will become the norm under Rhoads. He's been described as a great closer on the recruiting trail, and what we're seeing this year supports that.
The best thing about having so many commits this early is that it means we're getting our Plan A recruits for the most part. Yeah, I know somebody will try to point out Wayne Dorsey, Marcus Lucas, etc. but those aren't Plan A recruits. Those are guys you offer just on the chance that one of them will be interested. Real Plan A recruits are quality players that fit and have a decent level of interest in Iowa State. The only Plan A guy that I think we missed on was Tim Jackson, and he still might be considering us.
The more Plan A recruits we get, the more success we're going to have on the football field assuming most of them qualify and the coaches do a good job evaluating. When we're scrambling in January for Plan B and Plan C recruits, we're in trouble. I don't think we'll be doing a lot of that with Rhoads.
THE most reliable indicator for an ISU is who else offered....not just 'showed interest'. The 'plan' indicator is full of holes as to grading a recruiting class. And the 'star' rating is very subjective after the top tier of talent. As with any measure there are exceptions but this one works.
