Re: DE in waiting....
So if Auburn gets 1 of the top 3 DE they are going after then we get 4* recruit Joel Bonomolo. #29 rate Juco player and the #3 best Juco DE. If we don't get him the we get 3* Juco player in Paul Dancy. Who runs a 4.68 and had 28 TFL and 9.5 sacks this past year. Sounds like we win either way!!!

Re: DE in waiting....
I'd wish we'd just bite the bullet and skip recruitment of JUCO players. We need to start building some depth for the future.

Re: DE in waiting....
But if we get one of these guys and they make an immediate impact, it could help future recruiting. If that happens, depth will take care of itself.

Re: DE in waiting....
I just want our D to get more sacks. Whatever it takes.

As long a each of the JUCOs comes with a freshman of the same position I am fine with it. That takes up double the schollies on that position but we need immediate help on the line. There are probably only 1 or 2 guys in the whole class that can make an immediate impact at any school their first year. I think after this year our JUCOs come more because they ar every good than we need them. I am guessing only 3-4 JUCOs next year and less from then on out.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -
Re: DE in waiting....
The Iowa State model for success has to be with a mix of Juco's and high school talent. We need immediate influx of talent to produce the best possible results now, so that HS recruits see it and want to be a part of it. We aren't in a position to bring in enough HS recruits capable of making a huge impact immediately. Hence, a core of Juco recruits is absolutely necessary.
We aren't a program that can count on securing solid HS interest if we go 2-10 for the next two years. I'm not counting on a bowl for the 2010 season but I want to see competitive games with OU, UT, and Tech and hopefully 5+ wins. If this happens I think progress and momentum can be maintained. (Maybe even an upset of Utah, Iowa, Neb, or Mizzou) That would be fantastic.
I'm ecstatic to see the class closing with talented DE prospects. I say take them both!

So, the signing of a few JUCO players and the rest in High School kids is not only a standard practice, but, it helps eliminate the "REACHES" as the players usually are playing other quality kids and the evaluations are a bit closer to what they will expect at the next level. But there are still misses - i know....
Without Sims, we might get 3-4 wins, and if you don't think that part of our successes on the recruiting trail have not been a direct reflection of the success on the field, your not in tune with recruiting. More then one of our recruits has mentioned the Nebraska Game Video and the passion that CPR shows - no sims = no celebration in the Nebraska Locker Room never happens!!!!
Until we can get some of Coach Paul, Tom, Wally's guys going through our system, recruited to their system, to supplement the roster with JUCO players that will increase our chances of winning games is 100% fine by me. And when you consider such successful and powerful programs such as Auburn, Mississippi, Nebraska, LSU, Arizona, Oregon all have multiple JUCO recruits to supplement their rosters, why would we not be smart to supplement our roster with qualified talent, even if you can only have them for 2 years. For most programs, you will only get 2-3 years from a player any way because the Freshman starting and making a huge impact in football is the not the norm....
I will take 10 David Sims in this recruiting class because i can guarantee you our defense would be a lot better!!!!

You have to get JUCOs, I agree. I would just say that once you become established talent-wise, then you start taking less. Really JUCOs taken after stability has been established, are taken to cure a lack in recruiting of that position or attrition. They are a band aid. Right now we need more band aids than we will in the future.

and improves the quality of the entire class.

Interesting tidbit regarding who Auburn might drop Bonomolo for.....i don't think its 1 of 3 targets, i think its 1 or 2 Corey Lemonier or Gabe King.
I could care less, scoring another JUCO end would be exactly what we need imo. Everyone keeps talking about getting Parker back, but, from all the injuries i've seen, it usually takes 1.5-2 years for that player to get back to 100% from a serious knee injury.
Signing day is like xmas.....

Re: DE in waiting....
Iowa State has had some good success with JUCOs. Look at Seneca Wallace, Tim Dobbins, Alvin Bowen, and David Sims. I'm sure that there have been examples of JUCO players that have failed, but the same could be should about high school recruits as well. Taking JUCO helps out a struggling program like Iowa State because they should be more physical mature over high schoolers and more able to help team needs. The only thing from stopping them from starting is how well can they pick up the system.
