Re: Replacement for Ash

If nobody cares what the field conditions are why did coaches like Hayden Frye get accused of watering down the field when faster more talented teams were coming to town? The fact is a slippery and torn up playing surface neutralizes speed, and is an advantage for slower teams (Big 10). That field in Orlando was an embarassment. And the two conference champs the Big 10 beat hadn't proven much during the season with Oregon getting spanked by Boise State (plus the Pac 10 sucking in the bowl season) and the ACC very down even for them (and whoever heard of a major conference champion that can't pass in this day and age?). And I admitted that 4-3 was a great bowl season for the big 10 by their standards (weren't they 1-7 last year?)

Since you are going to go off single game results I will too. The ACC included the team that played Alabama as close as anyone during the regular season in Viginia Tech. Paul Johnson has a system that has worked everywhere he has gone. Speed isn't the only thing associated with football. Are you telling me the field conditions made LSU slower than PSU or that Miami was slower than Wisconsin? That's not the case. Could it be that those two teams were more fundamentally sound and did not rely on pure speed to win games? Oregon got beat by Boise, who in case you missed it went undefeated. I am sick of hearing that they are not capable of hanging with the big boys. They have done it in the past along with Utah and that is the only evidence in that argument. There is none to conclude they cannot play with the elite. Hayden Frye watered down the field because he knew his team was fundamentally better than the other. That is part of the game too. It is no different than southern school drying out fields to make them faster. How does Northwestern hang with Auburn? That should never happen. Minnesota had a toss up game really and MSU was missing a bunch of players and hung with TT. TT whooped Nebraska. MSU almost beat Iowa.

Those who stay will be champions.

Re: Replacement for Ash

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to Boise State and Utah, I also think those teams could play with anybody and would loved to have seen Boise play Iowa, as I think Boise would have pounded them. But I strongly disagree that a sloppy field doesn't help even out the game between speedy and more talented teams against slower less talented teams, and I'll bet 99% of football fans (and coaches) would agree with that. And I could make the excuse that TT had just lost their football coach and the program was in disarray, but I don't have to because they won the game. Actually once they changed qb's they went thru the Michigan State defense like a hot knife thru butter. I'll give you the Northwestern-Auburn game. That shouldn't have been close but then Northwestern has a darn good coach and Auburn has a lousy one.

Whoops- thought this was a Coach Ash replacement thread...

Sometimes it's not whether you win or lose; it's how good you looked while doing it.

No announcements. But I did notice that Ash is off the Coach's page at cyclone.com.

I understand your speed argument, I am just saying that if those teams were as sound, it wouldn't matter. it doesn't make them slower than the other team, they are probably still faster, but since they have always relied on that, they cannot play a different way. It evens out the speed aspect, but you still have to play the game the right way. A lot of fast teams become so accustomed to being factor than anyone else that they lack discipline. I am not saying it doesn't have an effect, I am just syaing it is a **** poor excuse to lose a game. At that level of college football, both teams have fast guys that are taken out of their element. Wisconsin and PSU played through it, Miami and LSU did not. As for MSU and TT I will take my head coach out every day if I can take away 7 of your contributing players. They have been practicing all season, without Leach they still knew what do to. He was fired a week before the bowl, he had them prepared.

Those who stay will be champions.

Re: Replacement for Ash

Agree losing 7 players is usually more of a hill to climb than losing your head coach. But then maybe Leach would have been smart enough to start (or at least bring into the game much earlier) the qb that brung em. The back-up qb proved to be better than the starter during the season and as I said, he tore thru the MSU defense like it wasn't even there. If he starts the game or comes in much earlier than the 4th quarter I'd have to believe that game would have been a blow-out. And actually I agree with you that Wisconsin and Penn State were better coached and smarter football teams in their games and deserved to win. But I'll also say that they likely needed a horrible field to overcome the speed of LSU and Miami. I can't imagine that Orlando field will be allowed to get anywhere close to that condition again for a bowl game. I believe they had state football play-offs a week earlier and then tried to re-sod it, but watering it only made it worse as there wasn't time for the sod to take root. The field really was a joke if you watched those games. Officials and even players were replacing torn out chunks of sod the size of footballs.

I would be surprised if we hear anything official before the end of the week. The job was posted either Thursday or Friday. As it is a job with the State of Iowa, I think the posting needs to be up for 7 calander days.

Re: Replacement for Ash

DOnt think it was posted in here, but I saw Rivals had their "Top Recruiters" by conference, and guess who was one of the 10 or so coaches listed.... CHris Ash. They write that he just moved onto Wisc. but still have him under the XII.

Also Tony Alford was the Big Ten recruiter of the year, which is odd since hes at Notre Dame. Too bad we couldnt keep him. Weren't there a few instances where he got into a lil trouble? I thnk they were ticky tack, but cant remember if it was him or someone else.
