My senior year I buckled down and wouldn't allow myself to skip more than 1 day of classes per week for the entire year. I also managed to schedule all of my classes on Tuesday and Thursdays for both semesters.
back in the dirty 30 days, many of the jocks did not attend class.
bill smith from grundy center, iowa, dick scesniak,a guard on the dirty 30 team, and dave hoppman,an all american tailback, and i from the wrestling team would meet at the delta sigma phi house and study for 3 hours of hard study. then we would go down town for a tall cool one and then go to bed.bill smith got chastised(sp.) for not attending class by coach clay stapelton.stapelton was all over smitty, scesniak and hoppman for skipping class. coach hasrold nichols did not care if i skipped class. i had several jobs that kept me busy in the agronomy dept.,botany dept, and waiting tables in the girl's dormitories.
smitty ended up with a 3.5,scesniak about a 3.6 and hoppy
ended up with above a 3.0,and i had a 4.0 that year. ole stapelton was all over smitty for academic indifference.stapelton had to eat his words when smiity got a 3.5 and after smitty got a 3.5 ,stapelton had to be quiet. we studied hard and we were in some pretty tough zoology courses together and they were not jock courses.when you study hard for 3 hours every night, you can do well on your school work.i was gone away on wrestling trips, but when hoppy, scesniak.smitty and i studied we hit it hard every night when i was in town and it paid off.hoppy was killed in an auto accident bout 10 years after he graduated from iowa state in the state of florida. he was an extremely nice fellow.
If players could be trusted to go to class then this wouldn't be necessary.
I still want to know how Darren Davis ever passed a class I had with him. I'd go to every class and study my butt off just to get a hard earned C+ yet he'd usually show up 1/2 way through class and sit down and take a nap and never take a single note in a class that the exams were heavy on questions from lecture material.
The same way Troy passed his classes. But SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
If I remember right Mac would have asst coaches go around at times and check to see if players were in class.
The gap in our economy is between what we have and what we think we ought to have--and that is a moral problem, not an economic one. - Paul Heyne
I had summer classes with Kenny Pratt and Kelvin Cato, Pratt took notes and studied and failed both. Cato taped paper over the glass on the door and layed his head down the whole class when the door opened he picked his head up, he passed.
