Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
Getting pressure on the QB.
Just watch last year's Kansas game as an example. Riesing had all day and then some to throw. I think Riesing and Meyer just hooked up for another completion as I type this. We win that game had we been able to apply any pressure at all.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
I'm not going to say anything that anybody doesn't already know, but I think the biggest question is how much this team can improve from year 1 to year 2. A lot of that is going to boil down to how much each individual player improves and knows his assignments, but as a team, are they going to capitalize on the success and momentum of last year and take another step forward, or are they going to plateau?
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
Defense wins Championships so I say pressure on the QB!!!

Getting pressure on the QB
All of the choices are a concern heading into this spring and beyond but the best way to take pressure off of our young linebackers is from quality play up front.
With AA, hopefully with a year under his belt of running the offense along with an off season of fine tuning some of the little stuff, we will see a dramatic increase of production and a decrease of turnovers. He looked pretty good in his second year of the Chizic era and hopefully he can do the same this year.
Should be fun and interesting to watch.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
Pressure on the QB. I do think that we will improve in that area as Parker comes back and the returning players should improve.
I am concerned about the LB's as they are young but feel they have potential to be good. Secondary should be pretty good.
Hope our new punter is as good as Brantner.

Voted getting pressure on the QB but I thinl "finding a playmaker at WR" should have been a choice.
We won't improve our win total unless both of those things happen and right now I just don't see us getting pressure on the QB any more than last season.

IMO- Our WR corp needs to show more. Better hands, the ability to get off the press, separation in route running and plays after the catch

We get Parker back but lose Lyle. That is at best a wash so someone else needs to step up. I thought Neal was starting to get some consistent pressure but he is not an everydown DE. We need someone to surprise us.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
I selected other, although if I had to select something from the list it would be getting pressure on the quarterback. For "other," I would say the performance of our defensive front seven. As noted, we have all new starters at linebacker, and very little depth from what I can tell. I will be interested to see how they perform, and who fills out the depth chart behind them. I am also quite interested in how our front-four fills out and performs as the year goes on. Aside from Parker, I'm not sure anyone is a lock for any position.
The top offensive storyline is undoubtedly depth at running back, but I don't find that nearly as interesting right now as the defensive front seven.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
developing a defensive line that can control offensive lines so they can make tackles with losses!!!!!!!

I think QB play is going to pick up, because these guys aren't learning anything. Herman's year 2 at Rice was a LOT better than year 1. Arnaud played fine in his 2nd year under McFarland, and I think he'll be better this year than last. The guy got injured, mid season, while playing under a new offense.
Depth at RB, however, is a bigger unknown for our offense. Losing A-Rob this year definitely hurt us, because our next guy wasn't anywhere near as effective. Developing depth at RB does 3 things. First, it doesn't require us to grind A-Rob into the ground, secondly it allows us to use him in the passing game more (where he looked very effective), and third if he DOES get injured, we're in a better position to continue effectively on offense.
If they are not, we are in trouble!
QB pressure.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
The "top story" to me is the offense coming together as a whole--after a year together under a new coordinator, the passing game really needs to gel.
Second isn't the presence of a pass rush, but whether there are enough quality bodies for a defensive line, period. The ends especially scare me--a pass rush would just be icing on the cake.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
Defensive Line/Getting Pressure on the QB....
We return Parker, which is a good thing, but its not like he's been Dwight Freeney for the past four years. 8 sacks in his time here...25% of those came in his first game and another 25% last year. He can hold his own in the run game, but when it comes to rushing the passer Lyle>Parker
Then we've got Patrick Neal, the guy everybody assumes will be recruited over. At 6'0'' 227# and without freakish athleticism everybody is confused as to why he plays. He must just be a guy who wont embarrass you and wont make critical mistakes. He played as a fresh at TE and started last year at DE. For as much as everybody wants him as a reserve, he may end up Jacy Hollowaying his way into the starting lineup.
Roosevelt Maggitt was a guy I thought would really step up and be that pass rush guy last year. Won the Def Scout Team Award, was doing great according to those practice reports, etc. Yet he's only a RS SO so he's got time.
Aaron Moore coming off redshirt and Rony Nelson coming in could provide that needed ability. The coaches think enough of Moore to list him as a co-starter with Parker so that says a lot. If Nelson gets his stuff straightened out, he definitely passes the eye test.
Cleyon Laing would probably benefit in playing the 3 tech as he's already the size of those guys already playing the position. Jake McD may be someone to watch this spring. Played a little last year after being sick and being listed at 241, he's now listed at 270 so he should be rearing back to full strength. Throw in Rump, Alburtis, BJ, Black, Woods, and Mansfield and we at least have some competition.
That's a lot of guys who have a decent shot of playing/starting, realistically we only NEED 6 or so to actually pan out so the numbers, I suppose, are on our side.

Thanks. I already knew that--and then some. That's why defensive end still scares the bejeebers out of me.
Re: Poll: What is your top storyline for spring football?
With the uncertainty in all the areas and questions noted above.... this team may go as far or fall short on the leg of the PUNTER !
Seriously... where is last year's team without Brandtner.... don't underestimate consistency at the punter position.... Good clean punts.... high punts for coverage... depth... everything... But of course... we won't need to punt right ?
In all honesty.... I will be just as interested in the punter this spring game as anyone.
GO STATE !
