For years, the Denver Broncos had the smallest or one of the smallest lines int he NFL, yet produced 1000 yard rushers year in and year out. Size is great and I would tke a 300lb guy that can move over a 280 lb guy that can't. BUT size is not everything.
One of the reasons for the success of the Broncos line is the way they were coached to play the game. They dive at the legs of un-engaged D-linemen. While not technically illegal is a tactic that is generally frowned upon by players as it can end a career pretty quickly. It happened to Willie Howard (rookie DT) for the Vikings, blew out his knee and broke his leg in one play against the Broncos. Was never the same and out of football a year later. The annoucers last year complain endlessly when Brady Quinn throws a block like that, but the Broncos O-line seems to get a pass. Who know now that Quinn plays for the Broncos maybe they will switch him to the O-line?
So on that depth chart our staring MLB is a true senior, but on our roster hes a redshirt junior.
He's both. He's a junior eligibility-wise, but a senior grade-wise. CPR has said countless times they were able to redshirt him last year. Sometimes, kids, for whatever reason, forgo their senior year of eligibility if they've already graduated. Schemling did that a few years ago, and there have been others.
I heard about a study done not too long ago that showed that line size does not correlate to better line play in the NFL. I think that was especially true for passing teams (the Colts have one of the smallest lines in the league). I think that size, while useful, is probably a bit overrated.
I keep telling my wife that but I'm not sure she agrees with you.
The reason the broncos were so successful is because of the one offensive line coach. I forgot his name but I believed once he left to go coach the falcons o line with turner the broncos running game has gone downhill. Even with one of the smallest lines they were usually atound 290. I agree size isnt everything but there is a major disadvantage and I am just hoping he can get up to about 300. I think an ideal size is around 310 for him.
