Big 12 Tour
Hi just to introduce myself a little bit my name is Paul Derrick Im from Houston, Texas and this year I plan on doing a once in a lifetime experience, I am going to watch a football game in every Big 12 stadium this year. I have never watched a Big 12 Football game live and am totally looking forward to this experience. You can see some details of my upcoming trip on www.thebig12tour.com and can contact me if need be at pderrick@thebig12tour.com . But the reason I am writing is Iowa State will be the first school I visit, and wanted to know if anyone had any advice onmust sees or any ideas that could help make the visit to the school even more memorable. Thanks all and I look forward to a great year of College Football. Go Cyclones!!

Re: Big 12 Tour
Should've picked a better game than the Thursday opener for tailgating season purposes. It won't be as huge as normal, but be ready early in the afternoon for a great tailgating scene outside the Jack. -

Re: Big 12 Tour
Agreed, i wish you were coming for a different game so you could really enjoy the tailgating here (its a bit more subdued for the thursday game since a lot have work in the afternoon, and some feel the need to go to class). That said, get out there early (we'll probably start around noonish), for tailgating.

Re: Big 12 Tour
Yeah tailgating is definitely something I wanna get involved in with each stadium, just hoping each one greets me with open arms -

Re: Big 12 Tour
Being from Houston we dont have a Big 12 School so I've always rooted for Texas, but always pull for any Big 12 Team against any other conference except Oklahoma, have always despised them

Re: Big 12 Tour
I totally agree with others that the tailgating will not be up to it's usual standards for the Thursday night game, but it will still be a fun night.
A couple questions for you ... 1) What are your travel plans for arriving/depating in Ames? and 2) What is the rest of your travel schedule?

Walking on water is easy. Just do it in December when it's frozen. -

Re: Big 12 Tour
First of all, kudos for you for taking this on ... I would love to partake in such an adventure
Having been to every Big 12 venue except Austin and Lubbock, they are all unique and fun places to watch a game
If I were you, I would tour the campus in the morning and then get to campustown (Welch Ave) by noon on gameday and have a few hours of drinking before getting to the stadium early. You will find the tailgating scene very welcoming and inviting. You could probably get an invite to multiple groups just from people on this board. Enjoy the tailgating scene directly outside Jack Trice, it is one of the best aspects of gameday in Ames.
You will probably get multiple suggestions about where to eat, etc. but I would focus more on spending time on campus, in campustown, and at the stadium rather than hitting up the local fare as far as restaurants, etc ... but that's just me.
As far as your trip to Lincoln, in the following days ... you'll find a much different scene. Tailgating is not as available and acceptable in Lincoln. You'll probably have better luck at the downtown bar scene, just a few blocks from the stadium. I would also suggest going into Memorial Stadium early so that you can walk around the entire building. It's a very cool place and everything inside is very accessible. You can walk everywhere.
If you want to know some places to go in Omaha or Lincoln on Friday night, let me know. I'll be at a high school game that night, but I assume you will be staying over here that night before the husker opener.
I won't be going to the WKU game, but I'll be in Ames on Thursday and Lincoln on Saturday just like you. Let me know if you have more questions.

Tailgating will be going by noon on a thursday game.
