Enough MBB for a minute... how about the football newcomers?
Our newest football class will be setting foot on campus here shortly... so who do you think might contribute right away this first year for us?
On offense, I think Albert Gary and Chris Young might get quite a bit of playing time.
On defense, I'll go with Jeremiah George and hopefully Rony Nelson too.
I know a lot of people are really high on Shontrelle Johnson, and I do think he will be a VERY good RB for us, but remember we still have ARob for this year. It might make the most sense for us to RS Shontrelle this year and let ARob do his thing with some very capable backups in Woody, White, and Blankenship. Then we have 4 full years of Shontrelle when ARob is gone.
Thoughts?

0% chance Shontrelle is redshirted IMO.

He better be our 2nd best RB on the team then? If he's not, it's a waste of a year to not RS him IMO.

Only way is if he is injured. I just don't see it. I think he is far too talented to be redshirted. I could be wrong here but I think he will be second most talented runner we have. Unless James White is much better than I think, Shontrelle will redshirt.

yes, he needs to be a clear #2 to play. if we have a #2 by committee, we need to redshirt SJ Jr. (i call him SJ Jr. because when people say SJ i think Sedrick)
Re: Enough MBB for a minute... how about the football newcomers?
Any chance he could contribute on special teams?

0%? So it is literally physically impossible?
I think he'll probably play if he is on top of the offense and stays healthy, I am sure if gets dinged up he might redshirt.
Re: Enough MBB for a minute... how about the football newcomers?
adrian bennett could turn into a good looking safety for us. big body, and with some coaching from wally he could turn into a big hitter. anthony young and jarvis west are some names im keeping an eye on too. also im interested to see what we do to fill the punting hole. will kirby step in right away?

You guys are all missing the "surprise" player in this class (IMO), T J McCullough. T J is 6'2' 190lbs, with legitimate 4.5 speed. Saw a picture of him, taken a couple of weeks ago, wowzer.
I think Shontrelle Johnson will have a tremendous career. (Just don't think it's much of a surprise anymore).

Since the coaches were looking for a clear No. 2 last year and didn't find one, I think there's a good possibility Johnson doesn't redshirt next year. Having said that, I also think that White and Woody stepped it up in spring football, so maybe they can afford to redshirt Johnson. But given those factors, if Johnson doesn't redshirt, think what that means for how good the coaches must think he is.
But personally, I just love a new football year so I can get a look at all the new football players. I can't do that when they redshirt them. So take anything I say with a grain of salt. My preference not to redshirt players is 100 percent selfish.

I think McCullough will be a stud too, but has a slowed down? He was running in the high 4.3s at one point, I thought. He might just grow into a linebacker with his size. When's the last time we had a LB with cornerback speed? And Terran Benton doesn't count.

the video where paul talks about him at cyclones.com says he is an amazing shut down corner so im excited about him...
Re: Enough MBB for a minute... how about the football newcomers?
Rony Nelson NEEDS to have an immediate impact if our defense is to have any hope of a pass rush this fall. Good to see McDonough have a good spring- looks like he may have found a spot on the interior...

Anything definitive on Floyd Mattison - i remember a while back there was talk he may not make it to Ames, is that true or do we not know yet?

I've not yet heard anything definitive on him but I still believe he will be here.
