One of the current candidates for Iowa governor basically tried to do the very thing the OP mentioned the last time he was in office. Polls seem to indicate that this candidate is going to be Iowa's next governor. So what's to stop him from trying it again this time around?

Your statement is very true, however, I cannot imagine Miles and "Farm Bureau Lang", sitting by if the Big East or the Big 12 were screwing Iowa. If I remember correctly, Lang handed out all the trophies at the state basketball tournaments just a few months ago promoting sports for all schools in Iowa. Now they sit idly by as we are being dragged through yet another turmoil. Will we hear from the Board of Regents this week? Texas' Board of Regents was all over the place the other day when Baylor was being left out for an invite into the Pac 10. Our Board of Regents has not even yet made a statement! Can they not create something effective?

We've got to be diligent in evaluating this," another SEC athletic director told ESPN.com's Schlabach. "We can't just add teams who are going to split the pie without adding anything substantial to the pie."

Ehhhhh. You mean like Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney?

I'll be darned if my engineering degree is from the university of Iowa. I've worked too hard to.get a degree from a half rate institution.

Re: University of Iowa at Ames
it should be more the other way around, sports teams don't define the university. Iowa State University would be the flagship school. We have more state of Iowa kids than any other school, we are centrally located, we have a presence in every county in the state through the extension service and we have more living alumni in the state than any other school.
So it would be Iowa State University at Iowa City or Iowa State University at Cedar Falls. So that would put us in the Big10, I guess. As for kinnick stadium and carver arena, just store corn or soybeans in them.

Re: University of Iowa at Ames
IF they would ever do this, I venture the schools would become the State University of Iowa at _____. That way there would be no "superior feelings" for having your universities name be chose and we could all have the best built in Iowa hog joke of all time (SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUIIIIIIII!)
For "I", for "S", forever!
For Iowa State all the way.
Let's go! To show them what the gang's all here for,
Go! To show them how the Cyclones cheer.
For "I", for "S", forever!
For Iowa State do it right!
It's time to climb up on the vict'ry wagon,
Fight! Iowa State, Fight! Fight! -

Regardless of what may or may not happen, ISU has greater growth potential IMO.
Eastern Iowa reminds me of (an extension of) the suburbs of Chicago, with a lot more space between. In Iowa City in particular the way things were set up a long time ago, when it was expected to become (and remain) the state capital, IMO limits future growth. The river divides things, and there are a couple of big bends to boot, a lot of the streets are dead ends, taxes are high, and so on. Most people there like things as they are. They don't want more growth. Cedar Rapids does, and it has some things going for it, including more manufacturing. But I just don't see it ever becoming as big as Des Moines (comparing metro areas that is).

I am sick of you clone fans with all of you gloom and doom. Like I said in another post. If you guys think you will end up without a decent BCS conference and quality Athletics situation then you have gone to the birds.
ISU will survive this bump (and yes I mean bump) in the road. SO what if you don't get to play Nebby. You will still have us to beat up once in awhile (hopefully we beat you guys more but recent history says otherwise) and ISU IS a respected Institution on the sports front.
I know you hate people like me meddling around but I happen to love college sports and it sucks to see so many decent Iowans miserable about somthing that likely will NOT happen. I can't stand your AD but he is really really good at his job. He will come up with somthing just fine. Now quit writing Eulogies for your school and get on with life. The sun will come up and things will work out. ISU is just too big of a fish to let die...and that WILL NOT happen.

and then go study the history of the state universities between about 1988 and 1994. Re: University of Iowa at Ames
There has NEVER been a year when more Iowa high school seniors have enrolled at Iowa than at ISU.
