Re: Iowa: Drop vs. Keep revisited
Keep. Imagine not playing this game every year. That is a travesty.
And be careful what you wish for people. If this game goes, it will NEVER, EVER come back again.

Re: Iowa: Drop vs. Keep revisited
One last thing - During Pollard's speech last week he said we made about 2 million more in TV revenue in 2009 compared to 2008 but that was mostly from the bowl. Do we make 2 million MORE than we would for the Iowa game than we would from a normal game? Good question to ask.

That is what a rivalry is about. The game means soooo much to the State of Iowa that it would be a travesty. Think of all the small businesses that would be hurt. We have a local golf course that does a CY-Hawk golf tournament. The golf course is packed and is one of their busisest days. Weddings are planned around the game. football parties are held at peoples houses. For one week out of the year, Iowans are focused on Iowa and everything it has to offer. kids wear their favorite colors to school. Teachers plan curriculum around the game. etc. etc.
It goes above and beyond the ramifications on the field. It is money for our AD, money for local businesses throughout the state. A time when people get together and have a good time. good natured ribbing.
It isn't an obsession, it is a rivalry, and a fun one at that.

Anytime people say they'd rather go 5-7 and not go to a bowl just to play this game it's an obsession.

I don't think the ISU/Iowa game is any more fun than Mizzou or KU but that's just me. I know it's really tough for some ISU fans to imagine a world w/o the Iowa Hawkeyes but you should give it a try, it's nice. Seriously? Of course it is more fun. Of course, it is different. For those that live in iowa, you work/live/entertain along side hok fans all day everyday. That alone makes it different. That alone adds some fun/excitement to the game. Most teams in the country have a rival. Heck a lot have more than one rival. Doesn't mean an obsession. Just means a rivalry.

But nowhere in the contract does it say we are not allowed to win. heck, we have scheduled UNI, UNLV, Kent St. Our winning % against those teams is about as good/bad as Iowa over the last decade. thing is it is more fun, creates more revenue, and gets us more bang for our buck in exposure. Sorry but Iowa vs ISU always has a chance to be nationally televised. Kent St vs ISU...not so much.

Re: Iowa: Drop vs. Keep revisited
I wouldn't mind dropping it, but I agree that if you can't go .500 in conference you really shouldn't be in a bowl game. Unfortunately with the number of bowls, they have to take a ton of mediocre teams.

If you believe CPR will make us a B12 contender, then we don't need an additional patsy win to make a bowl. There are a lot of people who can make it to Ames or Iowa City nearly every year but can't make it to a bowl game every year the Cyclones play in one. Why not keep the game and give people something to get excited about and possibly entice those on the fence to buy season tickets?
If you think running from the Iowa/ISU rivalry (and, yes, it is a rivalry) with our tail between our legs will give you a world without Squawkeyes, I want some of what you are smoking. The rhetoric that we endure from our "friends" to the east will be ramped up even more - and without the opportunity to refute it with "scoreboard" once in a while! KEEP! "There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -
Re: Iowa: Drop vs. Keep revisited
I want whatever CPR needs to make a better football program. Maybe the Iowa game could be every 2 or 3 years if need be.

Obviously you've never attended a football game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Fanbases that have great programs don't need a particular rival to get up for.
And yes, I'm seriously not obsessed with the Iowa Hawkeyes. I have no desire to see ISU play them in any sport. I do have a desire to see CPR build ISU into a perennial B12 contender which has absolutely nothing to do with U of I.

At what point did I suggest scheduling a patsy in place of Iowa? Personally I'd like to see us play Wisconsin.
If you care what Iowa fans think and say you are obsessed. Free your mind, forget Iowa.
