First, I loved that game, and being there in person, my blood was surging during the play.
But God dammit, we have run that very play at least 1,000 times since and not once has it netted anywhere near that kind of success. It's to the point I'm almost sorry Lane scored there, because everyone on the planet knows what it looks like now.

It only netted a long gain twice: Danielsen (2002 vs. Tech) and Moses (2000 at Iowa).
From 2002-04, WR were credited with 39 rush attempts. (That includes laterals and backward passes).
For 2005-09, that total is down to 20.

I think it is actually too long ago for today's players to really take it into account. That was two coaching staffs ago.
Actually if everyone knows about it, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Watching for a reverse forces the backside pursuit to stay at home and can help you on the other 90% of plays that aren't misdirection plays.
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
