Create a whole new trophy. I like the idea of the Jack Trice and Nile Kinnick statuettes. Call the trophy the Kinnick-Trice Trophy. I don't know about the base. Maybe a big base so you can etch the name of the winner every year.
Apparently no one celebrates tradition anymore, no matter how crappy it looks.
Please tell me what tradition exists in that trophy? Is there a story behind it? Is it like the Telephone Trophy you guys have with Mizzou? It's a funny looking trophy, but at least there's a reason why there's a half-red/half-yellow rotary telephone sitting on top of a wooden base. The Floyd trophy makes sense because running to the sidelines and grabbing and hoisting real pig after beating Minnesota would get Iowa some calls from the likes of PETA.
There are games where the trophy is more or less the object of the game. The Little Brown Jug and the Purdue Cannon, for example, are both trophies that were either stolen or kept by one team, and has essentially been fought over since.
Then there are games where the trophy is really not what matters. For example, Florida and Florida State don't have a trophy for their rivalry game. And in our case, the trophy itself doesn't mean anything. You could take a ear of corn and make it the trophy, and it would mean as much in terms of tradition. But even though the trophy itself isn't the object of the game, there's no reason it can't be a classy, nice looking trophy.
Alright, I did a quick search through the forums and don't really see a thread like this one. If there is one, my bad.
Anyway, so I remember talking about this with a few friends during the previous Iowa-Iowa State game and we all came to the not so original conclusion that the Cy-Hawk Trophy is ugly and seems really cheap (I remember the football looking like it was about to fall off when the trophy was being lifted). I mean, it's no Land Grant trophy...http://blogs.mcall.com/.a/6a00d8341c...1508970b-320wi (what IS that?!)
Here's the current trophy...
I'll admit that I don't know the design history of the trophy, so these are my personal views. The wooden box is a standard base for a trophy, though it could probably be upgraded. What gets me though are the figures on top. You have the skinny looking football player doing the stiff-arm pose. Okay, that's fine, I suppose, though he doesn't look like much of a football player. But just in case people didn't know it was a football trophy, they threw the giant football in there to really drive home the message.
Personally, I'd like to see the figures up top replaced with the two mascots, facing off. Herky in his uppercut pose and Cy sitting in his cyclone. Or if you really wanted to be creative, you'd have the two rolling up their sleeves, getting ready for a fight. Either way, the Cy-Hawk trophy shouldn't just have the namesakes in tiny images on the side.
Another alternative that would probably be classier, would be to have two statuettes of Jack Trice and Nile Kinnick. Trice was ISU's first African-American athlete and Jack Trice is the only stadium named after an African-American (only 1-A). Kinnick was Iowa's sole Heisman Trophy winner and Kinnick Stadium is the only stadium named after a Heisman winner. Both young men were taken much too early; Trice playing for his team, and Kinnick while serving his country.
Thoughts?
Worked are ***** off to win that trophy and you nit-wits want to replace it -- find something else to ***** about but leave that trophy alone -- it means a lot to a lot of cyclones.

Really? What about THAT trophy means a lot to the Cyclones? The basic wooden base? The small plaque thingies lazily attached? The Pop Warner style pieces up on top, like the football that is this close to falling off?
I'm not saying get rid of the concept of a Cy-Hawk Trophy. I'm saying replace this ugly one and get something nicer befitting the fiercest rivalry in the state. What's wrong with at least getting a trophy with Cy and Herky facing off? Or a classy one with Jack Trice and Nile Kinnick? Hell, it could be something as simple as replica ISU and Iowa helmets on top of the wooden base.
Again, the trophy isn't the object of the game. Sure, we run to the sidelines to get it, but the trophy doesn't hold some sort of myth, like previously mentioned examples of the Little Brown Jug, Floyd of Rosedale, or the Telephone Trophy.

You have no concept of how that "ugly" trophy has been used in the locker room, in recruiting and for personal player motivation. As an example, one year iowa took all their wins and put the little plates on the front of the trophy and all our wins on the ends... upside down --- that piece of wood that you think is so ugly is a key part of ISU FB player history. But you will never understand that because all you see is the run to the sideline after the game. Ignorance is bliss.
The need for a new Cy-Hawk trophy might be the only thing that most Clone and Hawk fans can agree on.
I am also a big fan of a Trice-Kinnick statue. I think that would have more tradition than the current Cy-Hawk trophy that looks like it was purchased at a garage sale.
CPR: Resuscitating ISU Football, one win at a time.
about the only recent football thread worse than this one is the one about some screwy sign language hand sign and creating pseudo-faux "traditions".
right up front: DON'T TOUCH THE TROPHY. heck yes it's an ugly trophy, but so is a big bronze pig, an old telephone, or some old, half-rotten wooden bucket and a lot more "trophy game" trophies. but players play their hearts out and fans cheer their a$$es off because of the rivalry, NOT because anyone's thinking, "oh, boy, what a purty trophy."
i know a plethora of former ISU players who literally would go to blows to keep the trophy they worked so hard to get from having a facelift just so some whiny ***** fans who attach too much of their self esteem to an inanimate symbol can feel better about its, and their, aesthetics. if you don't like it, go become an interior decorator!
final point: that ugly ***** trophy never looks more beautiful than in our trophy case.

Agree and wish all you want -- the fans have no say in this one. The trophy is for the players, it has an important and well respected tradition and it won't be changed.

Thats why the wins should be etched onto the trophy like the Paul Bunyan Axe (my favorite trophy in CFB).
