Barnett has a very quick release and a pretty strong arm for being 18.

I think thus far, they have all looked pretty good in the drills they've shown on cyclones.com. That's a good thing for all Cyclone fans. But don't be down on someone because they complimented one of our own guys.

A lot of NFL QBs that are some of the best ever have not had strong arms, so we all know that doesn't mean much. Accuracy is WAY more important.
Don't forget intelligence on the field. That quality is what sets Joe M, Johnny U, John E, and a host of HoFers and future HoFers from the average NFL QBs. If I had a choice between a smart QB with a less than average arm and a QB with a strong arm and average intelligence, I'll take the smart QB every time. Weight training can make up for some of the lack of arm strength, enough to get the the ball to the receivers in good shape.

    Re: QB video on cyclones.com

All of you are making valid points. We want our QB to have accuracy, arm strength, intelligence, decision making, leadership, escape ability, footwork, and "IT".

Trouble is, none of these guys has proven to have a combination of those things where it counts...in a game. I'm including Arnaud. Though it is his job, and rightfully so, we won 7 games last year most of the time in spite of his turnovers and inability to convert on 3rd downs. Tiller's resume to date is terrible for a potential Big 12 competitor, in that aspect FootballinTexas is right. Capello and Barnett are certainly physically gifted in some (differing) ways, after all they are both on scholarship. Barnett seems to be a bit more physically gifted than Capello, BUT that is merely a judgment from high school tapes. I believe that Barnett is the one and only QB that ISU has recruited in 2 years, is that right? If that is right it seems like the plan is for him to be the guy, since he is the one and only QB on the roster recruited by the current staff. Also, he has looked pretty comparable to the older guys in all the videos.
This is merely my opinion, but I hope you see my logic. Footballin is also right that we should be excited that we have 3 capable guys that will be pushing each other for the job next Spring, if Austen lasts that long. I'm excited to see which one can put it all together.

Capello was a late commit in 2009 so Herman had some input on him. I wouldn't say he was our first choice as a 5'11 2 Star with his only other offers (on Rivals) from Central Michigan and Bowling Green. I am thinking he was more of a fall back guy. He looks like he will have good accuracy and mechanics, but lack the overall physical package. Hopefully he will provide value as a career backup and can be servicable if forced into duty.

Barnett was a really early commit in the 2010 class. He actually signed just 3 months and 9 days after Capello signed to the 2009 class. That makes me think he was one of the staffs first choices. He was a 3 star, with offers from K-State and Houston. K-State is a fellow Big12 team with needs at QB and Houston is gaining a reputation as an offensive powerhouse with a Texas Tech like spread offense. QB Chase Keenum is a Heisman darkhorse for Houston this year if that tells you anything. Houston ended up with a better class than ISU last year as well.
Barnett is a much better athlete than Capello and is more of a Run-Pass option. He has been touted as having a really quick release and ability to move in the pocket to make plays. He has also been running a spread offense that is very similar to ISUs throughout highschool and has personally stated that this has helped him at ISU so far.

If anyone beats out Tiller next year, my money is on Barnett.

Tiller has the edge in game experience and in my opinion is the best athlete we have at QB. He can say he won at Nebraska, which not many ISU QBs can say so that helps his intangibles. If Tiller improves his timing with the offense and can hit his throws more consistently I think he will start for the next two year with Barnett (who I think will redshirt this year) following after for two years.

Thats my $.02 on the QB situation and all in all, I like our situation.

FYI, don't worry too much if ISU doesn't sign a big QB recruit this year. I think the next 4 years are locked up between Tiller and Barnett.
If we do sign a 3 star or better QB, then he will compete with Barnett after Tiller.
