What was it with McCarney and kickers?

Thanks, I did not know the situation. Maybe it was a case of poor development or lack of quality competition for the job.

I also agree with those saying that ultraconservative late game playcalling had as much or more to do with our kicking woes as anything else. the 04 and 05 teams were good enough offensively to win going away rather than having to scrape out late FG attempts.

What sucks more is that KU and MU soon after put together great seasons and built their program up while DMac tanked and our program had to start over. Painful.

tony yelk started when he was a freshman. and by the time he was a senior he was routinely booting kickoffs out of the back of the end zone.

kickers deserve scholarships. they win you games. and titles.

Yelk was awersome on KOs. I remember him getting the whole student section pumped up to jangle the keys when he did his little half bow before he started running towards the tee.

You guys must not be remembering the same Tony Yelk I am. If there was a record for most punts blocked, he would own it. He also routinely kicked the ball out of bounds on kickoffs setting the opposing team up at the 35 consistently. The guy was not very good.

As a matter of fact I remember one game where he kicked the ball OB on the kickoff like 2 or 3 times.

This just highlights his average at best stats. His missed opportunities and F'ups far overshadow this summary. Unfortunately for me and fortunate for Tony, I am unable to find a website detailing his missed FG's, EP's, Bocked kicks, Shanked Punts, and Kickoffs out-of-bounds.

I would lean toward that, too ... if we're splitting hairs about Danny-Mac's kickers.

Something I wondered, but I'm not familiar enough with specifics. Mac patterned his coaching approach somewhat similar to everyone from the Fry tree (Alvarez, Snyder, to some degree) as far as conservatism. (As much as I hate to admit it, Fry was a program-rejuvenating genius). During Iowa's resurgence in the '80s, how many games were decided on late FG's?

I don't seem to remember that happening all that frequently. I recall some of those early-80s teams winning by (1) getting an early lead (10, 14, 17 points); (2) playing field-position the rest of the game; (3) putting it on the defense to bend but not break. (turnover advantage was also part of the deal)

Games like KU ('05) and Alabama ('01) seemed to be cut from the same cloth ... yet both games ended up on the shoulders of the placekicker.

No one is disputing he was a disappointing FG kicker. If I remember correctly, after 2001 TY only was used to kick FG's that were longer than 40 yards. Maybe the reason you aren't able to find any evidence to support your argument is because it doesn't exist? Every kicker has a few gaffes in his career (especially one who was a cyclone for SIX years). TY was always excellent on punts and kick-offs, your insistence otherwise is baffling.

If memory serves me right, Walden had better kickers....Ty Stewart and Jeff Schudak (sp?) are the ones I remember best.

Yelk had one heck of a strong leg, too bad he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when it counted...(though that Independence Bowl kick vs. Alabama was good...he got shafted on that one).

We couldn't even get into field position. It seemed like we'd always stall out between the 40s (that is if we got that far).
