If the NCAA were to align the conferences...setup for a playoff system.
Here's a great way it could be done. Six 12 team "major" conferences with guaranteed bids. The other two BCS bids would go (one each) to the WAC and the MAC, which would essentially be 22 team conferences (each with two self contained divisions of 11 teams). This would be the 8 playoff slots. The 7th and 8th seeds would be reserved for the MAC and WAC winners and a panel would seed the other 6 conference champions. From there, its a straight 3 game playoff to a national champion. The beauty of this is that it puts every single Division 1 school in a BCS conference and sets up nicely for a playoff. Yes, its never going to happen but its fun to speculate what a rational alignment scheme might look like. Even without a playoff system, this setup would work well by making every team BCS eligilbe...right down to lowly Louisiana Monroe!

Lots of problems with this, starting with you left out Colorado.

Why don't you just leave the ACC divisions like they are currently?
Atlantic Division:
BC, Clemson, FSU, Maryland, NC State, Wake Forest
Coastal Division:
Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miama, UVA, UNC, Duke
And I don't see any reason why Boston College or Maryland would allow themselves to be forced out of the ACC. And I also don't understand why the ACC would allow the loss of Boston College and Maryland (a founding ACC member by the way) to be replaced by Florida Atlantic and ECU.

Fixed the Colorado omission.
Re: If the NCAA were to align the conferences...setup for a playoff system.
I would imagine that if the Big 12 went back to 12 teams that they would probably split up Texass and OK between the divisions. Otherwise the power is really weighted to the south with the Bugeaters now gone.
Also, distance would be a problem with Louisville and BYU together in the same conference. Louisville to Salt Lake City is a 25 hour drive according to Google Maps. I don't see that happening for Olympic Sports purposes.

If the NCAA were to align conferences??? The NCAA has no power at all to do this. They are only the governing body and nothing more.
The NCAA is worried about Mega Conferences forming and dumping the NCAA and starting their own "League"

Do you also sketch out the plans for the house that you and Scarlett Johannssen will buy, and the names of your five kids together?
