Two more Cyclones earn scholarships

Kuehl, Morton Earn Iowa State Football Scholarships

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State walkons Daniel Kuehl and Matt Morton have been awarded football scholarships by head coach Paul Rhoads. Kuehl is a senior punter from Sioux City-Heelan who is in the thick of the fight for the starting job at that position. Morton is a sophomore linebacker from Henderson, Texas.

“Daniel has demonstrated significant improvement this season,” Rhoads said. “He has a chance to be our starter next week. Matt is a hard worker who will see action as a starter on several of our special teams units.”

Iowa State opens the season Sept. 2 with a 7 p.m. game against Northern Illinois in Jack Trice Stadium.

Last Saturday, CPR told the media that he hadn't made a decision yet but that Kuehl had been the more consistent of the two during camp. With this announcement today, I wouldn't be totally surprised if he's the starter next Thursday.

If the punters are close, doesn't it make a lot more sense to redshirt the freshman and give yourself another year before you have to worry about recruiting another punter?

That makes a ton of sense to me.

Hopefully we never have to see either of the punters.

Along with Woody, that makes two sophomores that have earned a scholarship. I can't recall the last time that this has happened. Usually it is a 4th or 5th year senior that gets the scholarship for their last season. That tells me that the staff is convinced that these two guys can be valuable contributors.

Congratulations to all 4 guys who have earned a scholarship this month.

That isn't necessarily a good thing. How many times did kNU punt in their game against the 'Clones last year?:wink:

Do they get the Blakenship scholarship?

Morton lived in Buchanan when I was a CA there. Really good dude, I'm happy for him!

Does this mean that the Morton kid from Texas might be able to contribute at LB this year? Someone that is not a starter is going to have to play.

Anyone know anything about Morton? Is he fast? Athletic? Tough? Hard worker?
