A little too optimistic I think.

NU looked strong against an FCS team that had lost 21 straight games. I think they only gave up 180 yards rushing and 300 total yards to the mighty hilltoppers. Martinez is a 1st round draft pick this year.
I must be in the minority here, but after Thursday's game, I thought we looked pretty bad & expect it to be a fairly tough season. If NIU had a decent QB, they would have won that game. I love the W and I loved the effort we gave, but it just looks like we don't have the horses to accomplish much this year, IMO.
A better QB makes up for 17 points? NIU may not even be a good team, but I think they are completely average, which isn't an insult. We handled them much easier than most fans thought. There were some rough spots, but it was the first game. Oklahoma, who many predict to contend for a national title, won by 7 points over Utah State. I think it is a little early, and flat out wrong, to say we don't have the "horses to accomplish much this year."
Let's take it one week at a time.
This team shows the potential to be great, but it just seems like they arent there yet. There were way too many mistakes against NIU and we will not be able to get away with that against teams like NU, Iowa, Texas, and Oklahoma. (BTW I am the one that is picking ISU over Oklahoma) If we were playing the other three teams in the divison I would definently think ISU would have a chance. What I dont get is everyone bashing the guy that said he isnt sold on Austen Arnaud?!?! I know he's our best option but watching him throw those two picks Thursday really brought me back to the inconsistencies of last year. Like Joel Klatt said once you are that far in your career nobody can change the way you make decisions on whether to force the throw or to not. Watching film doesnt help you cut down on stupid decision-making.
I will say that even Mizzous passing game looked bad. Whatshisface passes were not very accurate. for the part of the game I watched.
Also have to take into account that while they couldve done things to make it closer, we also were close to winning by quite a bit more. Like everyone else, we've got quite a bit there to clean up before next week, and more importantly before conference play.
I dont have enough kool-aid to say we're going to win the north this year. But i certainly think getting to a bowl game isnt out of the question. Mizzou, KSU, Colorado, and Kansas are all very winnable, and with a win over UNI and if we can pick up one win between Utah\Texas Tech\Nebraska (which i think we will) we have a pretty solid shot at going to a bowl again.
Having been an Iowa State fan my entire life I have a hard time saying that any game is a sure win. Having said that I also am drinking enough cool-aide to think that this team with CPR has HEART. Heart wins games. I think that ISU has a good shot at every game this season.
