I certainly hope you don't judge Hoiberg by the same criteria.

KU is in for some rough times with Gill imo. He was the third coach after Buffalo's transition...it is likely he would appear to be the best with out actually being a good coach. I find it somewhat telling that NU did not even consider him, yet went with coordinator with a quick temper. The hiring of Long certainly does not inspire confidence (even if it was encouraged by the AD).

I find the idea of moving Opurum to Linebacker suspect at best.

The guy was 20-30 at Buffalo with one winning season (8-6), that is why Nebby said "NO WAY!" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turner_Gill -

What if he goes on to win the north this year or next? I was not one calling for his hire, but Jesus man...IT WAS ONE GAME!!!

Re: Where are all the Turner Gill groupies?
One game does not make/break a coach. But trying to talk sense into copenhagen would be like trying to get Willie Nelson to stop doing weed.

cyclones500 i hear you about the karma thing
Hey they may beat ISU this year. I doubt it, but you never know. I was on here reading some threads and it popped in my head all the hysteria about Gill and the contrast to that with the chilly reception the Rhoads hire brought. Just starting some discussion and good natured debate and commentary.

Stoops stripped Long of all play-calling responsibilities while at OU: then he got the head job at San Diego State and we all know how that turned out.

Re: Where are all the Turner Gill groupies?
Turner Gill is still a fine coach imo, one game doesn't change that. I'm more than happy with Paul Rhoads and he sold me and I want him for a LONG time, but Turner Gill just went into a bad situation, that KU team is BAD. They are a very untalented team.

I strongly disagree with that...Kelly is one of the most overrated coaches heading up a big time program right now. In 2006, his name would not have made a splash, and there is no way to really say what kind of recruits he would have pulled in (that is still to be determined at his coaching stop in Cincy).

I will refrain judgment on Gill, as we all knew that KU was losing a LOT of talent from last year's team. On top of that, they were going through a coaching regime change. A recipe for a rough transition year. We knew it, but the prognosticators for some reason didn't.
That being said, I will not feel sorry for them when they get rocked in a few games this year. I'm really hoping we have the ability to pour it on them this year. If we do have that ability, I really hope Rhoads doesn't let off the gas, just like they didn't let off when they were drilling us 45-7 in 2007. Especially after Gill immediately removed himself from consideration for our open head coaching job partly because he did not want to coach against kNebraska every year. Then he heads off to KU, where he would have had to coach against kNebraska every year had the realignment not occurred.

I agree with you, but thats also what they said about Weis. Good thing Kelly is one smart/tough SOB, I think Weis was just totally lost and had no idea what to do in the college game.

Like you said, he was lost and couldn't connect with college players. Though Kelly hasn't been at a big time program, he has shown that he can win at programs that haven't had long winning traditions.
