There are two things that really surprise me about KU so far.
One, I am surprised at how poor the gameday coaching was. Gill has been a D1 head coach for a few years. I can somewhat understand Chizik not managing the game well his first few years, but this isn't Gills first rodeo.
Second, I knew KU would struggle breaking in a lot of new starters on O, but I thought they had more talent than that. They have had pretty good recruiting numbers the last few years. Better than ISU. I know you can't tell everything by the star ratings, but I would expect that a team mostly composed of 3 and 4 star recruits would be able to beat an FCS team. If you look at the recruiting results in Macs last 4 years before Chizik took over there is no way you see mostly 3 stars with some big 4 stars as well.
Maybe the horrendous play all comes down to coaching. If so, I am surprised.
Your opinion is different than mine, I suspect. I can respect that, and would be willing to have a civilized discussion about it.
What makes you think Kelly would have been light years ahead of Chizel?
Is it his recruiting? Again, IMO, he has never had a job where recruiting is as difficult as it can be in Ames. Chizik did a pretty good job in this arena while he was here.
Was it his success against other teams in his conference? IMO, the 5-19 record we had under you know who would have been much, much better in the Big East, for example.
Was it the current players he had to work with? Cincy was loaded with talent when Kelly took over, and IMO, it is directly related to the area. Ohio is simply one of the best recruiting grounds around, and there are really no better north of the Mason-Dixon line, with the possible, however unlikely, exception of Pennsylvania.
It may have been game prep, which I readily admit, I have no debate. I will say it is easier to prepare with the athletes he had at his disposal, whom he did not have to bring in himself, against the Big East than it is against the Big 12.
I think B Kelly would have gotten more out of existing players than Chizik did. He would have at least not hired his former fishing buddies to be his coordinators when they had no business being here.
However, I don't know if Kelly would have recruited to Ames Iowa as well as Chizik, and more importantly Chiziks staff, did. Chiziks recruiting classes increased the athletic ability of our team noticably. There are a lot of current starters playing that were recruited by Chizik. There were some busts, but I think he had to take chances to try and get talent to ISU.
Kelly really did not have great recruiting classes ratings wize. Unfotunately, I don't know their team well enough to know how many of his recruits have exceeded expectations.
Game day coaching - Kelly wins hands down
Recruiting (which is probably more important to a building effort) - Chiz might have had a slight edge here.
