Post UPDATE: Long and in-depth Roundup for Monday, Aug 14th

Long and in-depth Roundup for Monday, Aug 14th
CycloneFanatic.com
Jeremy

I have a very lengthy roundup today since I haven't posted one in a while. I have broken the roundup into two sections this time to help differentiate the Football and Basketball sections for easier reading. The basketball section is particularly revealing and lengthy due to all of the recruiting activity.

Football:
  • Freshman running back Josh Johnson is improving at a rate unexpected by anybody on the Iowa State Football coaching staff. Johnson had an impressive showing at Saturday's scrimmage and made believers out of everybody in attendance. It's a certainty that Johnson will see some valuable minutes on the field during the course of the coming season.
  • Speaking of impressive freshmen at Saturday's scrimmage, everybody saw the first hints of Iowa State's future passing game when Austin Arnaud took the field. Arnaud is projected to red shirt this fall barring any injuries to likely All-Big 12 QB Bret Myer.
Basketball:
  • Iowa State is gearing up to host a few MBB recruits over the coming months. Having already secured a verbal commitment from Craig Brackins, Iowa State is laying the ground work for the first recruiting class targeted solely by the new coaching staff. Expectations are high for the class of '07 as Iowa State is involved with several high ranking recruits at numerous levels. Brackins for instance just moved up to a 5 star rating by Rivals.com and has moved up to the 17th position overall for the class of '07. Among those likely to visit Ames in the coming months are Kenton Walker, Malcolm Delaney, Diante Garrett, Andre McFarland, P'Allen Stinnett, Melvin Goins, and possibly a couple others. Both Walker and Garrett are expected on campus in the coming weeks.
  • Of those being recruited for the '07 class, Iowa State is currently the favorite for both Kenton Walker and Diante Garrett. Walker has numerous connections to ISU Assistant TJ Otzelberger and is likely to take an official visit to both Ames and Pitt in the near future. Garrett is also very interested in Iowa State and lists the Clones as his number one choice so far.
  • Also highly interested in Iowa State at this time are Malcolm Delaney, Ryan Harp, Melvin Goins, P'Allen Stinnett, and Andre McFarland. Jon Leuer appears to be the lone recruit losing interest in Iowa State at this time. I have been told that Leuer appears to be leaning towards playing either in the Big Ten or for Louisville, despite listing numerous schools as possible choices. Leuer currently has interest in Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Louisville, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, West Virginia, and Iowa State.
  • Malcolm Delaney appears to have narrowed his list of schools down to Virginia Tech, Iowa State, and Indiana. Currently Virginia Tech leads the pack with Iowa State coming in a close second. I would not be surprised to see a verbal to Virginia Tech by Delaney when he visits there on Sept. 2nd. Iowa State is currently expected to see a visit from Delaney after the VTech trip but that is not a guarantee if things go good in Virginia. Delaney is one of the priorities for the ISU coaching staff but is not the only option for a guard in the class of '07 and it would not have devastating consequences if he chose to go elsewhere. ISU has several options but would love to see a commitment from Delaney.
  • From numerous contacts and conversations, the list of priorities as I see it for '07 are as follows; Kenton Walker & Diante Garrett, Malcolm Delaney, P'Allen Stinnett, Andre McFarland, Melvin Goins, and then Ryan Harp. Stinnett and McFarland plan on taking an official visit to Iowa State but not before making a trip to the University of Idaho together in September. From what I have been told, both Stinnett and McFarland are the highest recruiting targets for Idaho and will be pressed extremely hard for a verbal before leaving campus. Nothing is certain with the Brewster duo and it's unclear what their intentions are at this time.
  • UPDATE: Potential '07 MBB recruit Melvin Goins will make an official visit to Iowa State on Aug 31st. I have been able to confirm that right now Goins has his list down to Iowa State, Virginia, and Wake Forest with Iowa State holding onto the number one spot.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I consider both Delaney and Garrett to be higher on my list than Stinnett, because we have a shortage of true point guards. Dunson may be able to fill in, but he's a combo guard and is best suited for the 2. Plus, McD has mentioned that Wesley Johnson is capable of playing the 2...so if you look at it that way, you have three players capable of playing the two, and only one player as a natural point guard. Need a point to be competetive in the Big 12.

and Stinnett can not visit ISU until at least October because of NCAA regulations that limit to one official visit per calendar year. Stinnett didn't play that well this summer and I think his stock has dropped.

Just read that Melvin Goins has ISU in top two along with Virginia. He plans on visiting later this month. Good pickup if we get him?

GO CLONES!

I think Delaney is priority 1, Walker is number 2, then the third scholarship goes to whichever remaining guard/swingman takes the spot. Not sold on Stinnett as his play this summer has not generated another offer from any high major teams, he has offers from us and Idaho, not an impressive list.
Jeremy, I have read a couple updates on Harp and he never mentions ISU, have you talked with him or someone regarding him? I think staff has moved on from Leuer and Walker has taken his place.
