Post McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes
CycloneFanatic.com
Jeremy Lind

I just got done watching the weekly McCarney press conference and below are the latest starting defensive changes that he announced a short while ago. There was not much else of substance in the presser but I would look for more news as the week goes on.
  • Jon Banks moving to backup SLB.
  • Steve Johnson now starting FS (replacing Banks).
  • Jason Harris backup FS behind Johnson.
  • Culbertson replacing Griebahn for kickoffs.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

Wow, this is absolutely mind-blowing to me. I mean I understand most things...and I know Banks hasn't played great this year, but turning our third leading tackler into a backup seems a little desperate to me. Especially considering he would be a 200 pound strongside linebacker.

And wasn't Johnson a former corner? I know Banks wasn't a big hitter, but he didn't miss a whole lot of tackles either. I hope this turns out good like I said, but this just smacks of desperation.

Were there any specific reasons given for the changes on defense, primarily Banks?

Moving Shaggy on kickoffs? I was under the impression he didn't have the leg for kickoffs. But the out of bounds kickoff on Saturday night probaably sealed Griebahn's fate.

Having Culbertson kickoff is a good move. Maybe now we can keep the kick inbounds.

Go Cyclones!!

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

I have wondered if part of our soft pass defense has been concern about our safeties. The last two years with Greedy & Moser our cB's have played alot more press coverage. In fact the first time I remember our cb's playing press coverage at the line of scrimmage was 2nd half of UNI game where we played that way about a fourth of the time. (seemed to work to). Perhaps we are looking for better coverage skills. Hopefully it increases our confidence and enables us to tighten things up.

I also noticed Fred Garrin played more than ever Sat night for Carper. Seemed like his was in for Adam on a lot of key plays. Not sure if Carper was dinged up or if the staff had more confidence in Fred in those situations.

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

I have noticed shaggy has much more of a leg this year. Distance wise his leg seems to be good to maybe 55 yards based on warm ups. Now I don't think his accuracy is up for that distance, but he has really progressed in leg strength.

I think Griebans problem is inconsistency. There is a wide range of results from kick to kick

Mac said in a quote that was in the DMR this morning that is was strictly performance based. And that he just wasn't getting good play from the safety position.

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

During Mac's era at Cyclone football, I don't ever recall this drastic of a personell change on defense that was based on performance during the season. The coaches must really see something on film to make this change. I hope it works.

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

I'm wondering if this move was more due to Carper's poor play rather than Banks'. Carper just looks lost and throwing a true freshman in Garrin won't help. This could also allow ISU to use more of that 3-4 defense with Carper and Banks in there.

Re: McCarney Press Conference - Defensive Changes

It comes down to speed on defense. I think Garrin was playing more because he is a pretty quick LB. The fact that he is a true freshman has nothing to do with it. Once you play at Texas and at Iowa, there are no excuses. I think that is the thing that Mac is missing with his front 7 in the box.
