Re: ISU MBB – A lost season or the return to greatness?

I agree with Jay Moe. I'm not so concerned with the final win-loss record as much as I am with seeing if and how our team improves during the course of the season. I would be very pleasantly surprised if we can make the NIT this year. An NCAA berth would get McDermott Big 12 Coach of the Year.

I wasn't sure about Morgan being fired at the end of last season. Part of that is because I really liked the guy on a personal level. I never want to see a good man fail. That being said, last year's team did NOT improve as the season went on, in fact, IMO, they got worse. I LOVE college basketball, especially the tournament, and I'll go on recored as saying that we would not have beaten ONE team in that tournament last season, including the 16 seeds. George Mason would have kicked our a$$. For that reason alone, I've come around to the idea of having a new head coach.

However, it would be disastrous to pull out the rug from under McDermott if the program struggles from a W-L standpoint the first couple of seasons. This program has had more coaching turnover the last 10-15 seasons than perhaps any other BCS school in America. That's no way to sustain success.

Their is a reason why our kids were not on anybody's radar screen, because they suck. This is not UNI!! This is a BIG TWELVE school! We need big time recruits! Not so so players. 3 years max for choach McDermott.
Hopefully Brackins will fly under the radar during the McDonalds game also. I mean he is the first ever 5 star recruit to fly under the radar.

Actually this guy wins for the dumbest post in the history of any Cyclone message board. Way to man up guy. I had no idea someone could post anything that dumb. Great job.

Jeremy ... you are starting out sounding like an apologist before the season starts. You sound like you are trying to 'manage our expectations'.

I just hope Pollard shows the same commitment to excellence with his own hire ... as you do concerning Mac.

I still have concerns over this hire -- and will call a turd a turd if I see it. That being said -- I already have my season tickets and cannot wait.

Thanks

Re: ISU MBB – A lost season or the return to greatness?

The difference is GMac hasn't coached a single game, DMac has coached for 12 years. I like both guys but there is a difference in tenure that many are already overlooking. While everybody has different opinions on DMac and what should happen, I think anybody that even thinks GMac should be fired two years from today is just down right dumb (my opinion of course).

I'm not an apologist, I just think people are stupid for trying to grade the new staff right now or even at the end of the first season. We started last season in the Top 25 and didn't even make the NIT, that is what you grade on.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I love the optimism around here.
I don't usually make such bold statements, but I'm going out on a limb with McIntosh. He doesn't have the physical skills of Blalock, but I think he's a much better passer and more of a team player, and definitely a better shooter from 3. He's not going to have spectacular alley-oop or breakaway reverse jams, but he's going to get the job done. I loved Blalock, but I think this guy could be better.

Come on big guy! Do you realize how small McIntosh is not only in height, but in how flimsy he is weight wise. And for a prediction by anyone on him being better than Tinsley before he even touches the floor is just crazy. The directions on the Kool aid container say not to mix too much sugar and you have done that my friend!

And as crummy as this one felt, Cyclone fans, it could be a lot worse. You could be a Hawkeye. - Sean Keeler (imagine that, actually quoting Keeler!)

I don't think anyone predicted he'd be better than Tinsley. I haven't seen him play, but I can imagine the top JC player out of California being on the same level as Blalock. I liked Blalock; he was a good point guard, but he was never a great point guard.

I'll agree that Blalock wasn't great in winning games, because we certainly didn't do that how we wanted to. But Will was an excellent passer. If McIntosh is as good as Blalock, I would be absolutely crazy happy.

CloneFan65 is correct. I didn't say he'd be better than Tinsley, and I don't think he will. But I think he could be outstanding.

Re: ISU MBB – A lost season or the return to greatness?

The best thing from last year to this year is that thing that you have to do when the other team has the ball. Uhhh yeah defense. I'd be shocked if Iowa State gave up more than 66-68 points per game all year. Yeah they may not score that much themselves, but McDermott had corn fed white boys shutting down a very talented Georgia Tech team a couple years ago in the dance. Imagine what he could do with real athletes.

I am still waiting to see if our bigs can jump and clear a rebound. We can do all the other things rightm, but if we are marshmallow soft in the middle, the Big 12 people will clobber us. We need someone to play the role of Rick Mahorn.

Ok, I have to put a big fat asterisk by this because I've only seen him play in the summer league. But from what I saw, he is an outstanding passer and court leader. He sees the court extremely well, and has a knack for getting the ball to people when their defensive player is out of position. He's a really good shooter, too; he can hit 3s without having a lot of time to set up. I was also very impressed with his floor leadership--the way he talks to his teammates and keeps everyone upbeat. A lot of times, I think that is more important than raw talent.

Re: ISU MBB – A lost season or the return to greatness?

This is by far the most brilliant post I have ever seen, I mean a guy who has no ISU credentials on a site that reportedly represents the school, bashing two undecided players as not all that good. Sure Stinett is a top 100 player, but you claim he is not that important, I would love to live in your world, I mean what have we had like 8 of these guys in the last 5 years? i am sure they will be poring in after our 13 win season this year. Maybe people should wait till they decide where are going and see who we get in return before the jump to the they aren't good enough anyways thread. I think they are good enough, the staff thinks they are great, what would you prefer, a bank of 3 ships till we can get 10 guys like cb?
