Rutgers Ends ISU’s Season, 69-58

DES MOINES, Iowa— No. 7 Rutgers shot 54.2 percent from the field en route to a 69-58 win over Iowa State Monday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Des Moines. The Cyclones fell down early and played catch-up throughout most of the game, cutting a 12-point deficit down to five points twice late in the second half. The loss ends ISU’s season at 21-13.

"I want to congratulate Coach Stringer and her outstanding team," ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. "I also want to thank the NCAA for inviting us and all of the people in Des Moines, and certainly all the Iowa State people who put this together. Even though we lost the game, I couldn't be more proud of my team."

We have to be proud of what the ladies accomplished. Next year looks to be very promising and I can't wait to see how well we do.

I agree. That is one team, (and coach) who overcame some pretty heavy adversity, to make it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. I'm amazed at what they accomplished with the hand dealt to them.

It was a good effort. Rutgers was a tad quicker with more physical bodies. Overall very proud of the sisters.

Re: Rutgers Ends ISU’s Season, 69-58

Anyone else catch the love-fest between the announcers and Vaughn? I threw up in my mouth a little when Fraschilla said that there was no better post player in the tournament, men's or women's, than her. I would say that we pretty much shut her down in the second half. She had her way with us in the first half, but scored maybe six points in the second? If she was so dominant, she should have put up 30+ on us. I also got a kick out him saying that "Vaughn's pivot foot was NAILED to the floor", and then the replay clearing showing that she shuffled off to Buffalo.

Excellent way to finish the season for the Sisters. Next year looks pretty damned good!

Re: Rutgers Ends ISU’s Season, 69-58

I think it was just a "pick your poison" type of night against Rutgers. We wanted to shut down their guards and we did in the first half, but their bigs scored. In the second half we wanted to shut down their bigs, and we did, but their guards got us.

Great game and it was Bill's coaching that kept us in it.
