Koll Named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Lisa Koll has been named USATF's Athlete of the Week after setting an American collegiate record in the women's 10,000-meters Friday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

A sophomore at Iowa State, Koll won the women's 10,000k crossing the finish line in an American collegiate record of 32 minutes 11.13 seconds. The previous record of 32:19.97 was set by Alicia Shay of Stanford in 2004. The collegiate record is 31:56.72 by Kenya's Sally Kipyego for Texas Tech in 2007.

Now in its seventh year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

I hope that Koll is just the first of this caliber athlete we get from Coach Ihmels. ISU has a proud tradition in x-country and has some history in track. There is no reason we can't, at least, get the team into the top half of the conference with some more individual champs.

Perhaps with another Fort Dodge grad(well soon to be) Katie Thompson. Ran faster at state her senior year than Lisa did. Felt a little bad for her the past couple years, hasn't had as strong of supporting cast as Lisa did.

Re: Koll Named USATF Athlete of the Week

I don't know how much if any it hurts us but we are not able to host any outdoor meets on our track due to the track's condition. I spoke with a member of the team a couple of days ago and he told me a new track is hoped for and right now the discussion is where to put it. He told me one idea was around the football field at the stadium but the FB program squashed that idea. Another idea is around the soccer field.

That is amazing! 10,000K is like over 6000 miles. Kidding aside that is pretty fast.
