AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s rally fell short as the Cyclones fell to eighth-ranked Oklahoma, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Sooners (36-11, 9-2 Big 12) led 3-0 after two innings and added to that lead with two more in the top of the sixth before holding off the Cyclones (26-20, 3-7).
In the second, OU put three on the board after three hits. Samantha Ricketts reached on an infield hit to shortstop that was speared by a diving Carrie Monroe, who got to her feet but was unable to retire Ricketts. ISU starter Rachel Zabriskie then issued a free pass to Lindsey Vandever and Savannah Long advanced Ricketts and Vandever with a sac bunt. Wendy Trott then dropped a bloop single into center to score Ricketts for the games’ first run.
Jessica Legendre followed with a well executed squeeze play that scored Vandever. A bases loaded walk to Oklahoma’s leading hitter Amber Flores increased the Sooners’ lead to 3-0.
