ISU's Hicks set for Tuesday surgery; career could be over

DMR Link

Ames, Ia. — Iowa State starting tailback Stevie Hicks is scheduled for knee surgery Tuesday, meaning his college career could be over.

Hicks, a senior, did not play in last Saturday's 31-10 loss at Kansas State. He suffered the injury during the first half against Texas Tech on Oct. 21.

Jason Scales and Josh Johnson were listed on the depth chart released today as the top two players at that position.

"He's having his (right) knee scoped, and we're hoping he recovers in time to be back this season," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "Sometimes guys come back from the procedure in just a week. Other guys react differently."

Receiver Todd Blythe, according to the depth chart, is expected to play Saturday. He is listed as a starting receiver, although he did not play against Kansas State because of a virus.

Thats too bad. Hicks has been injury prone his whole career. Imagine if he could have stayed healthy and put together a couple more seasons like he had back in 2004.

Stevie has never been a good back. He plays more like a full back. He is a great pass blocker and held onto the ball but just never, to me, seemed to be a good back. Didn't have big run ability.

I think Scales and Johnson will be a nice change of pace. Hopefully, they can both work on their pass blocking and HOLD onto the ball.

Hopefully our o-line can do a little more in their college time to help them be successful..

I haven't been a Hicks fan. I wish him the speedest recovery, but we are better with Jason Scales.

Well, he was no Troy Davis, or Darren Davis, or Ennis Haywood for that matter, but I'll miss the guy. Speedy recovery and I hope you're playing at some level soon!

Yeah...that Hicks...he stinks. Whats our record with/without him again?

Oh...he was having a career year when it comes to yards per carry.

Career year relative to his previous.

Also, I never said he stinks. I gave him credit for what he does well. Yet another example of you twisting people's words. You do it all the time you disagree with someone. Change your name to Spin Doctor instead.

You're getting your thong all twisted up again.

You said he wasn't good. The opposite of good is bad - stinks and bad are often related to one another. It wasn't a stretch.

Plus, I stated a couple facts. We have a better record with Hicks than without. And he's having a good year. If we were not playing from behind in almost every game - he'd have a lot better total yardage numbers too.

I think after TD a lot of folks set his play as a standard for our tailbacks.

IMO, the only quality Stevie lacks to be an NFL back is breakaway speed. I know thats a big quality to lack, probably the biggest. But he is strong, and somewhat quick.

With that said, too bad he hasn't had anything resembling an offensive line to run behind.

Not "good" can mean "average" or nothing extraordinary. I didn't use the words "bad" or "stinks". You inserted both of those. You do this all the time. I've seen it over and over again. The text is there. READ it. Hicks is good at some things and helps us win because he can pass block, which we do more of since we are always playing from behind. What hicks doesn't do well (meaning average so you won't insert "what hicks sucks at" here) is finding a hole without hesitation and making guys miss in the open field and break away speed. Scales and Johnson can provide (according to practice comments) just that. This is where you say "I was just playing, don't take it so seriously. Calm down. Don't get your shorts in knot, I was just joking". That is always your defense when I bust you on mis-quoting.

If Scales and Johnson are so much better than Hicks...you'd think they would be out there more often.

However, they are not. Scales and Johnson are quicker backs...yet are not as good as Hicks at this point.

That's too bad. When it rains, it pours for you guys. Keep your chins up and keep supporting your team through thick and thin. Last thing the players need now is for fans to turn their back on them.
