BOULDER, Colo.- Sunday marked the end of the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Potts Field, a meet in which Iowa State's underclassmen showed signs of a bright future. The Cyclone women finished the meet in ninth place with 36.5 points. Texas A&M won the women’s team title with 157 points.
ISU’s men’s squad racked up 26 points for an 11th-place finish. Colorado earned the men’s team crown putting up 138 points. Of the 62.5 total points scored by both Cyclone squads, the team’s freshmen and sophomores accounted for 45.5 points. Cyclones returning next year tallied 60.5 points of the overall total.
"We aren't excited about where we finished today, but I am excited about how we competed," said Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels. "The bulk of our points are coming back next season and we will have a year to recruit on top of that. We are going to keep making steps and moving up the ladder in the Big 12. This is one heck of a conference and it keeps getting better, but we are going to keep getting better. I am very proud of this group and the direction this program is going. We are excited about the future."
Iowa State’s distance runners tied for the most points scored by any women's distance unit with Texas Tech with 29 distance points. Koll earned 18 points by herself, which ranked tied for fourth overall among individuals.
