I was excited to see the incoming b-ball recruits in action, so I went down to see the games today. Will be interesting to see how they do over the next coupe of weeks, here's my initial impressions on our guys...
Game 1: Peak Performance (Garrett, Boozer, Christopherson, Hamilton) vs. CIO&SMC (Buckley, Brackins) - Garrett was doing his quickness thing, getting to the hoop & finishing some. Boozer had a short hot stretch on 3s that ended with a cold stretch. Christopherson seemed to rebound well for a guard, hit all of 5 or so shots impressively at halftime (all but 1 3 pointers), but the long range shots didn't seem to fall today in the game. Showed the ability to handle the ball fairly well and got to the hoop a couple of times. Hamilton is big, has some Paul Shirley like arc on his shot. Seems to do the fundamental things well (block out, rebound). Had a couple of chances to dunk it, but layed it up instead. Appears to be a below average run/jump athlete, but then again, he's no Aaron Agnew either. Buckley was playing SG, would have liked to see him at pG. He hit a 3, but was pretty quiet. Brackins hit 3-3s and was fouled on the 3rd to make the game close down the stretch, but Peak pulled out a narrow victory.
Game 2: Gratias (Vanderbeken-absent) vs. MOHA (Thompson, Pomlee) - 30 point blow out for Gratias lead by Ben Jacobson. Would have been nice to see Vanderbeken, but he wasn't there. Thompson had some good moves early on, even going to his left hand in the post a couple of times, against a physically weak defender. Seemed to cool off as the game went along. Pomlee appeared to live up to the Damion Staple comparison I've read on the board previously. Had a nice block, did some dirty work. Very raw offensively. Did my best to stay awake for game 3 given the lack of exciting ISU guys and the blow out.
Game 3: Coke (Petersen, Mann) vs. Granite Transformations (Eikmeier, Haluska) - Mann looked a bit awkward in warm ups, definitely more of a PF than a SF, but when the game started he went off--scoring nearly all of his team's first 15 or so points mostly on the block and maybe a time or two filling lanes on the break. He seems to be our Corey Johnson replacement, only lighter, faster, perhaps stronger and more aggressive. Plays bigger than he is, but the guy playing against him wasn't much bigger. Came back down to earth after the nice start, missing some shots in close, forcing it into the defense, etc. Still, a lot to like here. Eikmeier, Haluska, and Petersen did about the same. They hit some outside shots. Eikmeier did show the ability to drive some, but didn't do it much. I left at half time, so I may have missed some good stuff.

Depends on your definition, I doubt if he turns out as good as Hoiberg. Still, he has a similar build as hoiberg, both are decent rebounders for guards and his shot may be somewhat similar. Hoiberg was taller, more able to dunk. Scott C seems to be a better ball handler.

Forgot to mention, Harrrison Barnes is in the league, but wasn't there on Sunday. Wish I could have seen him and Vanderbeken

I was at the first game and I saw a few different things....The first thing I saw and confirmed after the game with the stat book was that Buckley had 4 three's and played pretty well all around. Secondly...Hamilton had a few good post moves and a nice little jump hook from the block. Third...Brackins did a lot more than just hit 3 triples.

I'd agree with you. I know I saw Buckley hit 3-4 on threes, the he missed a couple but he had a very nice outside shot. I also agree with the Brackins comment, he heated up from deep late but was pretty consistent with his defense and rebounding all game.

Oh, I'm sure you saw things that I either missed entirely or didn't think to include in my write up. Didn't mean it like they didn't do anything more than I said, just writing what I remembered and was thinking as I watched the game. Glad to see that Buckley hit 4 from down town, maybe he & Garrett can make for a solid backcourt with Lucca at the 3 before too long.

I can't remember more than 1 of Buckley's, but the 1 I remember looked good in terms of form, etc. I'm sure I just missed realizing that it was him on the other 3-3s, it was tough for me to figure out who everyone was that game, I showed up a few minutes late, and lots of people were hitting 3s all night long. I agree w/ Brackins, even though I just mentioned his hot streak. I was impressed with the effort, attitude, fundamentals, etc. of all our guys, especially considering that it was summer league.
