Absolutely!! I am going to be there screaming for a win for our man Dan, I hate to see this happen to him. It is too bad that he just couldn't get over that damn hump.

Jeremy, do you know if this decision was based solely on Jaime wanting a change at coach or did he feel some pressure from the boosters, alumni and fans.

Dan is a class guy...all the best to him. I hope he stays in a position at ISU close to the Athletic Dept. He could still help the University.

I have to agree with everything good anyone has said about coach mac. I have grown up with mainly Mac as the coach, I saw an 0-11 season, 3 near misses for heisman, 2 near misses at Big 12 north champions, and numerous other memorable feats accomplished by his squads. I have not been one to call for his head or anything like that, however saw that it was inevitable because of other fans and monetary issues. So, without talking about that further, I do want to share a couple recent memories of how great of a guy and cyclone, Mac has shown to me to be; last semester Jamie Pollard was going to come meet with my fraternity for a question and answer session/dinner, he couldnt make it due to being out of town (searching for a new basketball coach). We would have understood with a simple, he is busy, but Coach McCarney replaced him, came and had a great conversation with us answering all of our questions, and made it a very enjoyable experience. There is no reason he had to do that, let alone enjoy it (which it really seemed as though he did) and he did it enthusiasticaly. And so, as I try to wrap this up, when I heard that Jamie had to cancel on us for the second semester in a row (due to being "out of town" according to his secretary), possibly for a similar reason as last time; I can't help but be extremely saddened to think that Coach Mac might be done. I really wish, even if it wouldn't have worked monetarily or rationally, that we could have cleaned house with the assistants and kept him. If all is true, Best of luck Dan McCarney, thanks for everything, and we will miss you.

Thank you Dan McCarney and staff for the effort, sportsmanship and loyalty you gave to Iowa State. I sincerely wish you and all the coaches the best in your future endeavors.
I've always pulled for you to succeed. You've represented yourselves and the school well. Good luck in your future.

(sorry someone had to say it)

I think a solid crowd would be an enormous sendoff for McCarney, I just hope that more people realize how much he HAS done for us and come to appreciate it. There are a great many haters out there.

Well it was easy for a lot of us to to call for Mac's head because of a disappointing season but when it actually comes true, it's tough to swallow.
The Missouri game is going to be full of emotions for me. I wish it didn't have to end this way, but unfortunately it does.
I really, really, REALLY hope there is a huge crowd for the Missouri game. I don't care if the department has to GIVE out the tickets...Mac deserves a packed, loud JTS for his final game.
Dan, thanks for the memories. Good luck at your next stop. You are a great man.

DMAC: class act. class guy although I was upset about this season, I will be sad to see him go. And now with the way he is leaving... I will not say a negative thing about his tenure here..... He is a leader, a man and a good human being.
Good luck coach! We know you were a Cyclone through and through. JP: Class act.... I could never see this sort of thing happening in the East part of the state.... why look what they did to Dr. Tom ... and he is as classy as DMAC.
- keep.

Coach Mac:
Thanks for all the blood, sweat & tears you poured into the program. You took ISU from an also-ran to a legit program. I wish you the best in your future and hope you can enjoy life with your family in the meantime...

I mean I was 13 years old when he started coaching, I really don’t remember much of Jim Walden before him, and pretty much the entire time I’ve been following Cyclone football he’s been the coach. I always thought it wouldn’t really bother me when he got fired or left, but it’s actually kinda bumming me out a little bit. I at least wanted him to go out on top, like I was wondering if he won the north one of the last two years if he would leave. Like Jordan, David Robinson, or the cast from Seinfeld. It’s crazy to think about because I’ve never said a word to the guy, but I’m actually pretty broken up about him being let go. I hope the phone just starts ringing off the hook and he can get a job as a coordinator or something to get back on his feet. He’s a good guy that took a job that not a whole lot of people wanted and made it into at least a semi-attractive job destination. Plus, he made a lot of people give a crap about ISU football again, and made some people like me start caring about Cyclone football. I’ll always owe him a lot for that. | | |

How many coaches bring a team that is winless in Big 12 games (2003) into two consectutive years of Big 12 North title contention?

I, like other posters hate to see it end like this. Mac has been very instrumental in fund raising, recruiting student/athletes in other sports, and he made us proud to be a Cyclone when we started beating Iowa with regularity. He should have left after his 9 win season when he was a hot commodity. Keeping sustained success at a school at ISU is a challenge when ISU has the lowest budget in the conference.
I guess it's time to move on, maybe Jamie will find us our next Earle Bruce or our next Jim Criner.

I never even played any sort of organized football until I was in 7th grade, and was never a fan of football until I did. It is going to be very different not to see McCarney on those sidelines clapping his huge hands!
