Exclamation UPDATED: Dan McCarney In Final Negotiations For Resignation

UPDATED: Dan McCarney Is Being Asked To Resign As Head Coach of Iowa State Football
CycloneFanatic.com
Jeremy Lind

As was first confirmed around 9:30pm in a seperate topic, I will now announce on the front-page for guests to see as well; Dan McCarney has been or will shortly be asked to resign as the Head Coach of the Iowa State Football program. McCarney, who has been head coach for 12 years at ISU, has met several times with Jamie Pollard regarding the current season as well as where things can and should go heading into the off-season. It was relayed to me by several sources this evening that McCarney has in fact been asked to resign as part of his ongoing negotions with AD Jamie Pollard.

No formal resignation can be made until all of the negotiations are final with regards to any possible buyout or other details of the planned departure. It is not clear at this moment if an announcement is forthcoming as early as Wednesday or if it will be delayed until later in the week.

I had mentioned earlier that I thought things would develop rather timely and that people should not spread unsubstantiated rumors that may be detrimental to Coach McCarney or Iowa State University. Since that time I have received confirmation from several very highly placed sources that things did indeed develop rather quickly and that an announcement should be made in a timely fashion. Iowa State has a lot of plans for the future of the football program and it’s with those interests in mind that the changes are made at this time.

This will be a very tough blow to many fans that have grown up knowing Mac as the face of the Iowa State Athletic Department. There is no question that Dan McCarney is a great man, a great coach, and a very loyal and dedicated individual. It is with my greatest respect that I wish Dan all the luck in the world in his future endeavors, wherever they may lead. All of us have different opinions regarding the past 10 games, but we can all agree that Dan has done great things at ISU and he deserves all our gratitude as he enters a new challenge at the school of his choosing.

Update:

I have confirmed that an announcement will be made in a timely manner to allow for the Missouri game to be a celebration of what Mac has done while at Iowa State. It's not certain when exactly an announcement will be made but there will be time for people to plan on being at the Missouri game that may have otherwise not planned on attending.

Update x2:

Other publications have also now reported similar stories: ESPN, CycloneNation, and now CycloneReport have chimed in and have also stated that things are wrapping up in the McCarney era.

Update x3:

I wanted to clarify the wording that Dan is currently in negotiations with AD Jamie Pollard regarding his 'future' formal resignation. While the two negotiate, no formal resignation can be given. It will be after the negotiations that a formal resignation and announcement are made. Regardless that some will say that no resignation has been given, it is part of the ongoing negotiations that are only going on because of the planned resignation. They are one in the same. The stone hasn't been officially chisled yet, but it is as good as written in stone that McCarney will not return for his 13th season.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I've said it elsewhere, but I'm pretty sad to see him go. He took Iowa State from the bottom to respectability, and he conducted himself and his program in a first class manner. He was a great spokesman for Iowa State University, and he has no reason to do anything other than hold his head high and go on to bigger and better things. I know I will continue to follow whatever team he goes to. Thanks for all you've done, Mac.

I can only echo everything Cyclonepride said. I hope that Mac has nothing but success and happiness in his future, and knows what a difference he made at ISU. I will miss his energy and positive attitude.

I hope that at the end of the Mizzou game that ISU fans can show their class and at least give him an ovation for his last game at ISU. Whether they like him or not he has done a lot for us and hopefully no one boos him. He always was a class act and hopefully the fans return that.

I really can't conceive that anyone will boo him. Even the most hardcore Mac hater has to appreciate what he has done and give him respect.

I hope this will rally the players for the next 2 games, wanting to give Mac a going away present.

I will never forget the 2000 bowl season, before then a bowl appearance seemed to be a pipe dream.

I can't be at the Mizzou game (wedding in Florida), so those who attend cheer a little louder for Mac and the team for me.

I got really emotional when I first saw this, as Dan has been the face of Cyclone football for as long as I have been able to remember following football when I was a kid. It really saddens me to see him go because he brought us up from the bottom. It's too bad for him and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

I have a sick feeling in my stomach after reading this...

I never thought that it would go down like this, especially to a man that has done so much to even get us in the position that we have expectations now. Too bad this season fell apart like it did and cost Mac his job. I was really hoping that Mac would be the one to lead us for many more seasons while reaching unprecedented success. Just won't seem the same next season without him roaming the sidelines.

Mac should have left 3 or 4 years ago after the 2000 season and he had the chance to interview at some other schools. I don't think he did because he felt loyal to ISU.

Well J.P. you've made your decison and I accept it. Now it's up to you to figure out a way to energize the fan and alumni base so that you have a bigger budget to attract a talented coach and keep him. Please give the next guy better tools to work with than Coach McCarney had.

I don't think the closets going to be bare for the new coach, but he's got his work cut out for him....

I would like to say that I felt a change needed to be made, but I in NO way hate Mac. He did a good job turning ISU football around. He even won 2 bowl games at ISU. I never thought that was possible growing up. I cannot thank him enough, and I wish him well where ever he coaches next. I agree, I can't conceive anyone booing him. I have not and will not ever boo our own coaches or our players, ever! Now, if we were talking about refs, that is a completely different story. He deserves our thanks and respect. I hope we all give him the proper send off.

I've been trying to find words, but still can't find any. One thing's for sure, I'll be out there on Senior Day yelling my lungs out for one last win.

Deep within the heart of Iowa, a storm is brewing...
... the winds of change ripple throughout the vast fields of corn surrounding the small college town of Ames.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success.

This is Cyclone Football.
