Jeremy Lind
I just got back from the Jacobson Building to talk face-to-face with some sources regarding the story we broke last night about Dan McCarney being in final negotiations regarding his resignation as Iowa State’s Head Coach.
From those that I talked to just a little while ago, Dan will indeed tell his players this afternoon and will most likely hold a press conference sometime this evening to make things public. Dan will remain the head coach for the remainder of the season and will take part in a short going away ceremony at the Missouri game.
I also talked briefly about a couple of replacements that currently sit atop the short list to take over the soon to be vacant head coaching position. While no official conversations have taken place with possible replacements since they are currently still coaching at their respective programs, feelers have been sent out to a couple of the primary targets of Jamie Pollard. The list of candidates has shrunk as plans to quickly find a replacement move into full swing.
From what I am told, all indications are that the replacement coach will be somebody that the majority of the donors and fan-base can and will relate with and respect. While there are a few candidates that are of interest, there is one that the Athletic Department will go after the hardest and has possibly already received some warm indications from.
Expect more on this as the story develops. Update:
The press conference is being tentatively scheduled for 6pm tonight from what I just confirmed.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Well keep us posted Jeremy! I think this is an exciting turn of events and exciting for the future of ISU football. Still though i wish Dan the best... it may work out better for him... My friends and i were talking about him being the DC at Miami if Alvarez takes the job.

If he turns in his resignation, does Iowa State still have to pay him for his buyout?

So much for "waiting till end of season" drama. I still think JP is doing it right, get moving now with the hiring of new Head Coach. Looks like JP will charge full speed ahead as he did with Basketball Head hire. Any speculation on Aircraft charters? destinations? names? etc. Let more drama begin.

As much as I think a change is needed...I'm still very sad. Dan is all I've known since getting hooked on Cyclone Football. He'll be missed.

The final paragraph is pretty obvious. I am not sure you need a "source" to tell you that Pollard hopes to hire someone that everyone likes. C'mon, that's it?
I'll go on record now as saying that Pollard will conduct an exhaustive national search for a coach that will bring out the very best in Iowa State.

This may seem too soon to look ahead like this but a few questions.
What happens to the other coaches? I have heard of a buyout for the whole staff for around 1 million. But do they have to even though there isnt a head coach. Of course most head coaches have their own staff they want and hire, but I know some of us would like to see some of the coaches stay.
Recruiting has got to take a big hit for this right? Now you have kids that dont even know whow the coach is, and the ones that already committed dont have the coach they thought they would. This will be a hard to see many players recruited this year. Which in turn, may make next year worse than this one.
