Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

Dan did the same for us. Washington State isn't what I would call a top Pac-10 team, and the Pac-10 is weaker than the Big 12. I wouldn't mind having Chizek or Pelini. Having a strong defense year in and year out will win you ball games. The 04 and 05 teams proved that. Its a lot easier to outscore your opponents when they aren't scoring. I also think they would be able to hire some very competant coordinators. I worry about Harbaugh recruiting a little bit. Although, I can be wrong.

Dan did not do the same for us. Or at least I don't remember ever being considered for a BSC bowl or winning our conference. The comparison is ridiculous.

Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

Price was named national coach of the year. His 2002 WSU team compiled a 7-1 conference mark, before losing to Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl. I don't remember Dan taking ISU to the Rose Bowl or any other BSC bowl for that matter.

Price has some issues with ethics and he's also an old guy.

I think JP will go for a younger, cleaner model that will be around longer.

The ethics issue is old news. He was largely vindicated when he settled a libel and defamation lawsuit against Sports Illustrated. Even in his recent position at UTEP he managed to get them ranked for the first time in their history and was a finalist for coach of the year.

And how old was Eddie Sutton when OSU hired him, and what did he do for OSU?

Point well taken but basketball is a lot different game than football. You have to manage only 10 or 12 kids vs 100 plus for football.

Let's start with a guy who's has a half way clean slate.

Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

Granted there are differences between coaching football and basketball. In basketball there are fewer kids to manage. However, in football there is almost an assistant coach for every position. The point about Mike Price is that he has a "proven slate" of successful NCAA coaching. Assistant coaches of even the highest pedigree flop as much as succeed.

Just remember, our current head football coach didn't exactly have a "clean slate" when he started at ISU.

Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

Since when did IAA teams quit giving scholarships. I thought UNI had about 21 scholarships a year to give out. We can give out up to 25 per year.

I think Harbaugh would be a good choice. The guy can obviously win games. He comes from a highly successful sports minded family. His father used him to recruit at Western Kentucky so he knows that angle. He is an up and comer who is hungry. He might not be here for the long haul. But he would give our program visibility, excitement, and hope for the future. And it is imperative that we have those objectives met in the next five years. I think JP has his sights set on Harbaugh and possibly another if that doesn't pan out. I actually think this team has talent, we just need an injection of innovation as we have become too predictable.

There is NO QUESTION in my mind that Dan Mac is a classy individual who loves ISU. For the good of ISU Football, he is stepping down. JP hit the nail on the head when he said that ISU Football is not well right now and must be well, to do all of the things we are planning on doing. Mac would still be coaching, if this team had performed reasonably. Mac did a fine job in building our program for the last 12 years. But sadly, it is time for us to part ways.

I just got done confirming the names of the people that I believe are at the top of the list of possible replacements for Dan McCarney. The names are based on those that I have heard thrown around by those very close to the situation at hand.

As far as names that I have heard, they differ from what others are reporting a little bit. Here are the current top names from what I have heard this afternoon.
  • San Diego HC Jim Harbaugh
  • UTEP HC Mike Price
  • Texas Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik
  • LSU Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini
  • Arizona Cardinals Offensive Line Coach Steve Loney
  • Pitt Defensive Coordinator Paul Rhodes
  • Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell
  • Broncos Assistant Tim Brewster
  • Wisconsin Offensive Coordinator Paul Chryst
Also to confirm, the Football Banquet will be held next Friday night instead of in December as previously planned.
Heard that Jay Norvell (qb coach at Nebraska) is the minority candidate.

5. Youth, he's 41
6. Coaching the talent he inherits to championships.
7. Big 10 connection. That would help vs hawkeyes
8. Former pro player...can show top recruits he has a pipeline to pros
9. QB-should help Meyer immediately, and Arnad, who may be as good as Meyer right now
10. Immediately FIRE UP Cyclone fans across the country. IT WOULD BE EXCITING.
Very good points. I agree that he'd be a risk, but I wouldn't be upset if we got him =)

San Diego is in the Pioneer League with Drake, who also does not give out scholarships. If you look at the Pioneer League, each team has 1 thing in common...their bball programs are D-1A. They're all schools that have committed to bball at the highest level, but have focussed the rest of their efforts (for the most part) on academics...

Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

My cousin works in the athletic dept at UTEP and says it would take an aweful lot to get Price out of there. Apparently a bulk of his family has moved down there since he took the job and he as achieved "god-like" status down in that west texas town.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Re: Short list of possible replacements for Iowa State

It's looking like Pelini would go to Michigan State over ISU since MSU can probably offer him more, but I believe ISU has one thing over MSU and that is the Big Twelve. I think Pelini would love to get back in the Big Twelve to stick it to the cornhuskers. I know he played for Ohio State (if I remember correctly) so he has ties to both the big twelve and small 11, but that fire to get back into the big twelve north is there.

If I were to have my vote, I'd lean towards Pelini or Chizek! I think both of those guys could offer quite a bit to this program.

On another note.....farewell big daddy Mac! He was the best thing to happen to Cyclone athletics and he will be missed.

Go Cyclones!

Yeah. I think Pelini is going to be in high demand this year, and I don't know if ISU has the resources to coax him to Ames.
