Where's it at? I would love a reason to come down to San Diego, I love La Jolla.

This just proves Marty has no idea what he is talking about. Just a couple of years ago the Gameday crew was in Iowa City for the Ohio State game, which was a 7pm kick on ABC and while not a big game they did play Syracuse at night last year. Also I wouldn't really call the ISU/Iowa game a "big" game, no one outside the boarders of Iowa cares about this game except for people who either lived in Iowa and moved or people who attended the schools and moved.

I think it totally makes sense and Hansen was totally backing him on it. Hansen even went as far to say he wasn't completely conffident about sending his daughter to Iowa because of the party culture there.

I would say there are probably more people in Iowa City that weekend than any other, right? That would tell me it is a big game, certainly bigger than Syracuse. Their point was a night game would mean more time to party and more time for stupid crap to happen....

But for Marty's theory to be true the school would have to have control over game times. The BTN would be the ones making this decision and I really don't think they care about the drinking issues in IC.

I see your point now about it being a big game. I think I heard somewhere that Kinnick holds 70,000 but they were expecting over 100,000 just to party, not much difference than at Ames when 75,000 were partying and 50,000 actually had tickets. I thought you meant big game as far as television goes and I was saying this isn't exactly a game that will drive ratings through the roof like the Ohio St/USC game will which I believe is the same day.

I can also understand their point about more time for stupid stuff to happen, but you can go anywhere in the country and when people have been drinking all day stupid crap is going to happen. That just comes with night games, it shouldn't but it does.

I never said the Syracuse game would or is bigger than this game either.

He needs to attend a night game in SEC country or Wisconsin. Iowa is no different than any other big school.

Yes, I'm an ISU Alum and Hawkeye fan...get over it.

that right there is why I usually laugh at how the UofI sees itself.

I could point to another ongoing UofI thread about what is different about Iowa....... and ANY other school out there.

I have been to night games at several SEC schools (Floida, Georgia, Tennessee, Miss St, Auburn). The difference at Iowa is it's almost a competitiion to see how drunk you can be, other places I have been it's more to have fun, alcohol is just involved... It's similar at Iowa State though. I just think that drinking in general is glorified alot more here than other places I have seen.

Those numbers are roughly correct when the game is at Kinnick, but Jack Trice is a different story. While waiting to cross the street on my way out of the Iowa State-Iowa game last year, I talked to a Story County sheriff and the Ames PD commander and asked them about crowd numbers. They both said that in addition to the 50,000 inside the stadium, there were another 55,000 to 60,000 just tailgating in the lots throughout the game. They told us that way more people come to just tailgate when the game is at Jack Trice because we have way more room to accommodate tailgaters and it's easier to get in/out.

I disagree emphatically and wholeheartedly. I was born and raised in Iowa City, so I know exactly what that's like. I've also been to gamedays in plenty of big school cities. Relative to their peers, Iowa students drink WAY more irresponsibly. I don't think they necessarily drink more in volume than everyone else (though there is certainly a large average volume consumed), but the culture in Iowa City is the same on gamedays as it is every other weekend (and weekday) of the year: drink as much as possible, as fast as possible, until you're as wasted as possible, and keep it up for as long as possible. If there happens to be a football game that day, well, that's just a sheer coincidence. Iowa is a HUGE party school, period. If you don't drink, you are an outcast almost everywhere. (I've seen this with my own eyes, so don't you dare call BS on that.) If you do drink, you do it much more dangerously on a regular basis than students at most other schools. Substance-free entertainment options are severely limited, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Hansen is right to be concerned.

Re: Iowa State at Iowa 11am, Big Ten Network

Ornry, you are spot on about the party school culture in ic. I remember seeing some statistics in a psych class back in the day from a study on drinking habits at the three state schools. The amount of binge drinking, underage drinking, and other risk taking behaviors was much higher at eiu than either ISU or UNI. I would certainly have some reservations about sending a child to school there.

I also think that some of the problems the football program has been facing over there are as much related to cultural issues of the campus and town as much as a lack of oversight from the coaching staff.

Unfortunately, Iowa students and Illinois students are pretty much the same.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

That's funny, I seem to remember participating in a full blown riot my sophomore year with a bunch of students drinking irresponsibly.

I thought Iowa students were just the ones that couldn't get in to Illinois?

Funny how most of those involved, or at least the ones I know who were, were not from ISU but other schools. Not necessarily Iowa, but other schools.
