I disagree emphatically and wholeheartedly. I was born and raised in Iowa City, so I know exactly what that's like. I've also been to gamedays in plenty of big school cities. Relative to their peers, Iowa students drink WAY more irresponsibly. I don't think they necessarily drink more in volume than everyone else (though there is certainly a large average volume consumed), but the culture in Iowa City is the same on gamedays as it is every other weekend (and weekday) of the year: drink as much as possible, as fast as possible, until you're as wasted as possible, and keep it up for as long as possible. If there happens to be a football game that day, well, that's just a sheer coincidence. Iowa is a HUGE party school, period. If you don't drink, you are an outcast almost everywhere. (I've seen this with my own eyes, so don't you dare call BS on that.) If you do drink, you do it much more dangerously on a regular basis than students at most other schools. Substance-free entertainment options are severely limited, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Hansen is right to be concerned. You are dead wrong if you think Iowa is any different. I currently live in Madison and know what its like on gameday up here. Im dont know how many times the ambulance drives down regent street for alcohol poisoning to students. Ive seen kids passed out on the sidewalks at 3pm, passed out in there lawns on breech street by 9am. A lot of the students go home passed out before the game even starts. I guess Hansen better keep his child and have her home schooled for college.

That still doesn't mean that what goes down at either Iowa or Wisconsin is normal behavior for college students everywhere; it certainly is not.
