Re: Tim Brewster As ISU’s Next Head Coach?

Just because Harbaugh played for da Bears doesn't make him the best candidate. Personally, I think he would be a mistake. Yeah, he would have some appeal, but that doesn't win games. Just ask Mac.

Sorry...not on board with this one or excited.

He has nothing even close to the experience he needs to be the HC of a BCS conf school.

What scares me the most is he been just a Tight Ends Coach for 8 years now and nothing else.

Please JP, find someone better. We can't gamble our future on an unproven coach.

The hardest part on all this is not having met any of these guys personally. Some may look better on paper, but not in person. I would think a lot would depend with the interview JP has. He's a go by the gut kind of guy, and that face to face would be critical unless he has met a person before. I'm sure he will be at the game in Boulder, very handy for interview one. If he takes a few days off to go to California, that may be interview number two. The new hire has to be at least as impressive as Mac in person, and that won't be easy

Very true...I'm only basing my opinion on paper. I'd love to be wrong believe me. Just don't want to risk being right.

I agree. To a certain extent, however, a big part of this is, in fact, how the new ISU coach looks on paper. If JP hires the best coach there is, but you hear a collective disgruntled groan from Cyclone Nation, he's not going to sell the season tix he needs to sell (unless we starting winning rather quickly).

Re: Tim Brewster As ISU’s Next Head Coach?

All of these posts have been quite interesting. The thing I'll add on the topic is this: From the many times I have heard Jamie P speak about the FB program - you can tell that this is his #1 PRIORITY. In the press conference yesterday (Wed.), he talked about the FB program needing to be healthy! From those types of comments (which have been made on many occasions), I feel confident that we will get an extremely gifted coach & representative of the University!

The search process is basically complete and the hiring is near - look how quickly it has happened. Yet, JP has been doing his homework for a long time - I guarantee that!! And he is NOT about to hire someone who "might" be able to take ISU to the next level. He's going to get someone who is the "right" person with the "right" ties with the "right" system and the "right" attitude. Don't know if you can get anyone with the same amount of passion and positive outlook as DMac, but I believe strongly that the next person will be the right one.

I have to admit that the names on JP's shortlist didn't look very appealing to me at first, but that press conference - although almost unbearable to watch - confirmed in me that JP's #1 duty is to take Cyclone FB to the NEXT LEVEL. I believe he will get it done!!

I'm not doubting JP (yet) but if I'm in HR and that's Brewster's resume...his is one of the first I toss aside. Sorry, but on paper I see nothing.

If Brewster is the choice, what do you think the chances are that he brings his son, 4-star 2007 QB commit of the Illini, with him? He also has a son who is a highly regarded DB in the 2008 class.

Re: Tim Brewster As ISU’s Next Head Coach?

Any time I hear fans of another school say only good things about a guy, call him a recruiting god, and say that they either don't want him in the conference or that they do, so that it helps the strength of the conference. In addition NFL teams don't hire recruiters, this says that he is also a very good coach and player developer. He also has been a lot of very good places for meeting great football people, which would help build a staff. I guess when I look at the paper I see a very good coach that meets all four of my criteria for a good coach; fans like him, recruiting, coaching/development, building a staff. So my point I guess is that if Pollard is impressed with him as a person, leader, and coach I am all for it.

If nothing else, maybe we could lure back Pop Warner. His last gig paid him $250/month plus room and board. It'd be great...retro...back to basics. Maybe he could lure Eddie Cochems in as OC. Great innovator.

He's been a tight ends coach for the last 9 seasons. No wonder I've never even heard of him. Why is he even being considered?

Re: Tim Brewster As ISU’s Next Head Coach?

My only concern about Brewster is this.

He is very eager to get a HC job. That is something he has been wanting. What would tell that he wouldnt take this job and a short time later head in a more promising program with a bigger budget, fan base, support, and tradition. Or even to the NFL.

The nice thing about Dan was we all knew he would stay. He wouldnt take another job for anything. I know this isnt a reason of why not to hire an idividual, but that would be a shame to see. It would be nice to see us get someone who would strive to become the Dean of the Big 12 just like Dan.

Otherwise, i really like what i see from this guy.

I probably like Harbaugh best. They talked a little about San Diego on KXNO when they were about to play Drake, and it sounds like they are national leaders in offense and defense, or were at the time.

The only reason I think he lost out the Illini job was that Zook was just as good a recruiter and had been a head coach. After hearing about what he has done, I'm sold on him (not so much on Harbaugh) being the next Cyclone coach. Especially if this is the guy is Pollard's #1. Had Pollard done us wrong yet? The man is a wizard.
