Re: For those worried about the basketball facilities being snubbed...

I have been one of the most outspoken proponets of getting the practice facility done and I am extremely thrilled with this. Yes, originally facility was going to be attached to Hilton, and it was going to be available for use for Basketball, VB, and Wrestling - obviously that got scaled back a little bit and they really need to find something better for Wrestling. Overall though they did what had to be done to get it opened soon and that is important.

Original pricetag for the BB practice facility upgrade - something like 70 million. If they can do a lot for 8 million you have to do it. Good job AD.

EDIT: You know when they have a shower in the coaches offices those guys are logging some hours. We appreciate the hard work coaches! Good luck!

Well if the "good news" is what we think it might be...we might have TWO new facilities in the fall of '09. Man o man...would that be cool or what.

The one thing that I hope is that they really thought about this and acted quickly, not just acting quickly. I wouldn't want the department to get into this and then regret it in the future...it needs to be a quality design.

Away from coaches offices, away from Hilton. away from academic classrooms, away from dorms, away from acadmic center, poor choice.

It was not $70 million... this is a very poor choice to locate it far from Hilton and the rest of campus, where the students live and study, the coaches offices, etc.

The coaches offices are on the second floor of the practice facility

I hope down the line after a handful of tourney apperences and bowl games the money will again be there for something on campus. I like where JP is taking things so far...You dont need an golden elevator to get you to the next level just a helping hand and determination!

This project is going to cause some tension in the athletic department at ISU...I will be interested to see how it all plays out.

Agree about the tension it will cause but they keep that pretty quiet.

Those that went to school at ISU, how many lived near campus? The majority of my friends, and myself, lived nowhere near campus. A good chunk lived out where this practice facility will be located. I don't think the location will be an issue at all.

As long as VB and wresting are not forgotten, I think it'll be fine. Can't do it all at once...

Just speculating...It might be a way to get what we need now...sell is back to Jenson/City at a later date(increasing the value of the land and those apartment buildings) and build again later.

Planning for Stadium Upgrades to Continue - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - Iowa State Cyclones Sports

You're right, 60-70 million was the original pricetag for the entirety of the Hilton upgrades. However, the pricetag for the practice facility was originally 35 million dollars - this is getting done for 8 and it'll be done soon.

I don't think anybody is claiming this will be the absolute best option, and it's definitely not the best option for the VB and Wrestling teams. However, saving 27 million and several years off the project is important. They can find something for Wrestling and VB - it sucks for them at the moment but basketball and football need to be competitive in order to generate the cash needed to maintain those programs as well.
