Iowa State Unveils Plan For Basketball Practice Facility

Plans are up on cyclones.com

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University announced Thursday plans for a 36,000-square foot basketball practice facility, pending approvals from the City of Ames and the Board of Regents, that could open as soon as September of 2009.

The new facility will be dedicated exclusively to the men’s and women’s basketball programs, including separate gymnasiums, locker rooms, player lounges and coaches’ offices for each team and a sports medicine unit. The facility will be located on two acres of land on the west side of Ames that is being donated to the Iowa State University Foundation for this purpose by local developer Dickson Jensen. It will be part of a 10-acre comprehensive retail and commercial development planned for that area.

“We were very excited when Dickson approached us about his desire to help our basketball programs by donating his land and also building a state-of-the-art practice facility for our men’s and women’s basketball teams,” said Athletics Director Jamie Pollard.

It's interesting that it's over in West Ames. It looks fantastic, too!

Cost

The facility will cost approximately $8 million and will be funded entirely by the athletics program. The athletics department has already raised $2.5 million for the facility and will continue discussions with other Cyclone constituents over the next several months in hopes of raising the entire cost of the project.

Timeframe

Aug. 2008 Request Board of Regents and City of Ames approvals Sept. 2008 Tentative date to begin construction Sept. 2009 Tentative completion date Oct. 2009 Opens for men’s and women’s basketball practice
Facility Features

  • Total floor space of 36,000 square feet
  • Separate 10,000-square foot practice gymnasiums for each program
  • Separate player lounges and locker rooms
  • State-of-the-art theatre room for viewing game video
  • Medical treatment area
  • Coaches’ offices and conference rooms
I wonder how many lottery tickets Pollard buys per week...

Yeah, that is odd. I thought this was to be connected to Hilton.

So are they saying it is going to be out on the very west side?

It says in the article that building it over in West Ames would be a lot cheaper than having it connected to Hilton...

As a result of the land donation, the University plans to recommend to the Board of Regents a design build construction process with an accelerated completion date that will provide the athletics department a much more affordable facility than an addition to Hilton Coliseum which was previously being considered.

so, where exactly is this going to be located? Awesome, but is it a disadvantage at all that it will not be connected to Hilton?

Arrived in STL via Ames, IA & Bloomington, IN!

In addition, the new facility is strictly basketball. Previous "plans" for the practice facility encompassed both hoops programs and volleyball I thought.

It sounds like it - it says there's a 10-acre commercial area planned, and it's donated by Jensen? I'm not sure where that is - is it down by WTP? Or maybe off of Lincoln Way?

Also out of the flood plain. Doesn't say that, but is a good thing.
