Time to put up or shut up, you're either with us or against us
Beware of my opinions below if you are easily offended...
With the recent events having had time to settle in to everybody's mindset, I wanted to call out all of you fans that are trying to put down Iowa State and Jamie Pollard regarding the recent changes.
It is often said there are two kinds of fans, the vocal minority, and the mainstream majority. While that is true, Iowa State is in a very unique position that requires all fans to support the school, not just certain subsets. Regardless of if you want to win, or just have an excuse to quit complaining, start working to support the programs rather than working your hardest to put them down before they have even a chance to prove themselves.
Now, many of you have been very vocal about not liking Deace or KXNO because they only cover
ISU to a certain extent and aren't vocal enough about the teams. Answer me this, why are you still complaining now that you have the most powerful FM radio station in the state blasting the good message from border to border? If you are complaining about the recent radio changes, not only are you in the minority, you are somebody that can't comprehend the world we live in today.
With
ISU moving to The Bus 100.3 FM, many of the posts on the boards have been saying how things are going to go down hill without Deace, and that Marty & Miller would say or do anything on their show to gain a buck. Well, if you don't support them or give them a reason to talk about
ISU in a positive way, why would they say anything good about our teams? Radio is all about ratings and if their ratings aren't coming from Cyclone fans because the fans are too stubborn to support every voice in the Cyclone world, why would any radio station support the fanbase in return? Every single positive word about
ISU helps in the so-called "Hawkeye State". Start supporting all of the broadcasters so they have a reason to support us.
Iowa State has never before seen a single moment in time where they were setup for more success than they are now. It's no longer a question of why can't
ISU get a great AD that bleeds cardinal and gold, but rather how long will the new AD put up with the crap the fans have been throwing his way. I for one cannot think of a single time in my life I have looked forward to something as much as I am the next few basketball, football, and wrestling seasons at Iowa State. I can honestly say that I have not a single doubt about our new basketball, wrestling, and AD staffs and their ability and drive to make
ISU a premier athletic and academic powerhouse.
To all of you out there that question Greg McDermott or Jamie Pollard's desire to achieve a greater level of success, maybe you need to start asking yourself what exactly you've done to further the success of
ISU on and off the field/court/mat. It's not a matter of what you think should have happened regarding Morgan or the basketball player defections, it's about the future of the entire athletic department and what we can do for them going forward. Not only do you have a responsibility to support the programs financially, but also vocally and with character.
Steve Deace was long thought of as a complete hack when he first hit the airwaves. Nobody thought he would provide any service to the Cyclone community and some of those feelings still exist. Regardless of if you agree with everything he says, you have a responsibility to support him when he is out there trying to find a reason to defend Iowa State. Deace is obviously not a Hawk fan and has done pretty darn good about helping Iowa State when nobody has given him a reason to. The same could be said for Marty & Miller. With the recent remarks they've heard about them personally and professionally, why the heck would either of them ever want to say anything good about
ISU? I sure as heck wouldn't if I was in their position.
Marty & Miller might not be the perfect Cyclone-bread propagator of the good Cyclone gospel, but you still have a responsibility to try and give them something positive to talk about. If you are too stubborn to do that, you really have no excuse but yourself for why
ISU has always been a joke in the sports world before the past decade.
When I was growing up, there wasn't a single bright moment in the Cyclone Football program and now we've been to a bowl game 5 of the past 6 years. That is progress. Now, you can complain that we've hit a plateau with the football program and I wouldn't argue with you, but, you have to remember that the recent changes aren't about your opinion, or mine. It's about creating an atmosphere that is a great incubator for success that we have never seen in Ames, IA. McCarney is a great coach and is probably in his last two or three seasons as a Cyclone if things don't improve to a Jan 1st bowl game in the next few seasons. I think you would be hard pressed to find a way to formulate more than 6 games this year and it will probably lead to the vocal minority becoming the majority demanding the departure of the greatest Cyclone Football coach in history.
It's time people stop debating how much people like Steve Deace, Paul Clark, Chris Williams, Ken Miller, Marty Tirrell, and myself, help the Cyclones. It's not about any of us anymore, it's about the overall picture that we are all working day and night for, the success of all Cyclones on and off the court. Regardless of what site is your favorite, we all have the same goals behind the scenes; success throughout the entire Cyclone community.
Now, I know some of you may not agree with my opinions stated above but it's time we as Cyclone fans get past the bickering BS that has forever molded our lack of success. If you are a person that is not happy unless you can complain, please just quite pretending to be a Cyclone fan and come out of the closet and become a Hawk fan. You can't expect success if you aren't willing to pull out your wallet and shut your mouth. This is a new time in the Cyclone world and one that you are letting go by without putting forth your own best effort.
It's time to putt up or shut up. You decide the future of the athletic programs, and right now, you're doing a terrible job.
Sincerely,
Jeremy
