Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

How would Sherman be a step down from mac? Recruits want to get to the NFL and having a former head coach as your coach means contacts in the NFL, which means the recruits will come!

The only former NFL coach we want is Ditka... he will take us to the promised land...

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Sherman, Brewster, Ditka, Pelini .... are there any people in coaching that aren't candidates? Next people are going to be telling me there is interest in bringing Mike Tice and his entire crew including Loney back to Ames to be the mini Vikings!

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Let's face it. Everyone likes Mac, but the show got old. Sherman would be a great hire. Immeadiate legitimacy. Pollard is going to have to increase the football budget significantly to get to where he wants to go. Why would a guy like Sherman not want a 5 year $1.5 mill a year contract?

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Whenever I hear about a head coach returning from the NFL to college I think of Chuck Fairbanks who moved from the Patriots to Colorado. I think he won something like 5 games in 3 years at Colorado - and 2 of the wins were against us.

Does Sherman have the Connections?

I have no idea if ISU is interested in Sherman, but I can see any college HC job being attractive to a former NFL HC. The hours are shorter during the season, there is an off season and what person couldn't live in Ames IA on $1m.

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

My vote goes to Brewster, I want a coach that has the ''Balls to the Walls'' attitude towards recruiting, and face it, ISU'S Offensive and Defensive line have not been the best, hence the poor record, He's young, has a fiery personality. (from what I have read about him) Get his a** on board, he has 2 sons playing for Mullen HS in Denver that is currently 11-0 and Barry Alvarez wanted him....Good Enough for me..Don't lose out on him....HITMAN

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Jeremy,
I think a lot of us talked to JP at the CU game...he was very accessible and friendly. He wonded where the press comes up with all the names etc...but did not show his hand at all. The names could all be right, or a couple with some extras thrown in, or all a smokescreen. He's pretty cagy. I suspect only Prez G. and JP's wife know the top candidates. But one thing I'm very confident of, he will announce a successor very soon after our last game. I don't believe he will be willing to wait until after bowls are played, as we would lose most of our recruits. Assuming my assumption is correct (and it's only an assumption) who would be available to be announced as the new head coach soon?
D-1 headcoaches are out I assume
Pro Coaches in the middle of a playoff run?
I don't know who would be willing to have their name announced if they are an assist. coach at a major program.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Assistants in the NFL would be free to announcements regarding their future before the end of their season. There really hasn't been a problem with this before and it's less of a distraction there because they're just one assistant and they don't have to worry about recruits, etc. Assistants or position coaches in college are obviously a little different because they have a bigger individual impact and it's usually customary to wait until your team has ended the season before you announce your future plans. This could be circumvented but is probably highly unlikely to happen. I would think that if a college level coach was inked, it wouldn't be made officially public until that team is done for the year, or at the very least in the regular season.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Do you seriously think that Pollard who is known for a "squeaky clean" program would want a single guy like Harbaugh who is known for being a party guy and has the OWI to prove it? I'm not saying that a guy is bad because of it, but I wonder if that would stop Pollard from bringing him on board.

Well i don't consider one OWI as big deal personally... I don't know anything about his partying though.

Re: Could ISU get a former NFL Head Coach?

Good question on the DUI...that could rule Hargaugh out. I suppose it depends on what he's done since. Most of us certainly could have gotten one at some time, even if we've been lucky. But a coach may be different. If we don't hire him, I'm betting he's in a big time program within 2 years.
